Lucifer - City of Angels?

Posted: 03 Jan 2018 10:00 AM PST

Set before the show's First Season, "City of Angels?" offers a glimpse at the various series regulars in the early days of Lucifer's (Tom Ellis) arrival on Earth long before he had become a nightclub owner or began his partnership with Chloe Decker (Lauren German). Breaking up the current arc, it seems an odd place to insert such an episode that doesn't (at least initially) add much to the season's bigger storylines. That said, there's plenty to enjoy here including the more acrimonious relationship between Lucifer and Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) and the angel's naivete at human existence.

Some of the jokes are a bit over the top (Amenadiel completely unaware he is getting put into a porn shoot) and the early days of Decker trying to earn her detective's badge without her devilish partner aren't nearly as fun as usual. What we do see is the process of Lucifer falling in love with the concept of Los Angeles, his enjoyment at toying withe Amenadiel (at least until his brother raises his ire with his "evil" commentary), choosing to remove his wings, and making his stand against his absentee father. "City of Angels?" proves to be an amusing one-off fans of the series should enjoy while also working as a primer for those jumping into the show for the first time.

Powerpuff Girls: The Bureau of Bad #1

Posted: 03 Jan 2018 08:00 AM PST

Using a concept put to great use in one of the best Batman: The Animated Series episodes ever made, Powerpuff Girls: The Bureau of Bad #1 opens with the Townsville High Villains Council gathering together to gripe about what a menace the Power Girls are and who among them is worthy to lead the group against the pint-sized heroines. If the first issue is any indication, it will take a miracle for these villains to ever reach a consensus.

After the initial set-up, which gives us the awesomeness that is Mojo Jojo, most of the first issue takes place as a flashback involving Princess Morbucks' recent attempt to defeat the heroines by stealing the rights to the name of the Powerpuff Girls. While initially the girls are confused by the turn of events, they soon discover they don't need to be called the Powerpuff Girls in order to save the day.

Powerpuff Girls: The Bureau of Bad gets off to a good start here, and I'll be curious to see what tales we'll get from the various villains in the issues to come. Worth a look.
