New ‘Black Panther’ Trailer Gives Best Look at Superhero Yet

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 07:20 PM PST

The latest trailer for Black Panther just dropped during the college football national championship, and it’s filled with non-stop action.

Chadwick Boseman reprises the titular role he originated in Captain America: Civil War. In addition to appearing in the upcoming standalone film, his character will also appear in this summer’s Avengers: Infinity War.

The special look featured both previously seen footage as well as some new scenes.

“The Black Panther lives,” declares Okoye (The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira), as the King of Wakanda steps off his futuristic jet.

“I hope you’re ready bro,” taunts archenemy Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), “because I’m just getting started.” He later draws his daggers, declaring, “I want your weapons, your secrets, it’s all mine know.” Klaue (Andy Serkis), also proves to be a formidable foe, armed with a powerful arm cannon.

But the hero also has allies, including his brilliant scientist sister Shuri (Letitia Wright).

The trailer drop followed a halftime performance by hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar. Lamar performs the lead single on the film’s soundtrack and curated the other songs.

“Black Panther is amazing, from its cast to its director,” Lamar said in an interview prior to the game. “The magnitude of this film showcases a great marriage of art and culture. I'm truly honored to contribute my knowledge of producing sound and writing music alongside Ryan [Coogler] and Marvel's vision.”

Black Panther roars into theaters on February 16, 2018.

‘My Little Pony: The Movie’: Watch the Never-Before-Seen Prologue!

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 06:14 PM PST

My Little Pony made the jump from the small screen to the big screen last fall with My Little Pony: The Movie.

In the film, Princess Twilight Sparkle (Tara Strong) embarks on a journey to save Ponyville from the evil Storm King (Liev Schreiber) and his lieutenant Tempest Shadow (Emily Blunt).

Twilight Sparkle is joined by her squad, the Mane 6: Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rarity. Their adventures take them beyond Equestria to the undersea kingdom of Seaquestria. Among the new characters they encounter are include the parrot pirate Captain Celaeno (Zoe Saldana) and Princess Skystar (Kristin Chenoweth), a seapony.

To celebrate the release of My Little Pony: The Movie on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, and On Demand January 9, FANDOM has the exclusive, never-been-seen prologue to the film. In the clip, fans meet Princess Twilight Sparkle, whose introduction is crashed by the villainous Tempest Shadow.

Behind the Scenes Secrets

FANDOM also caught up with Tara Strong to talk about her experience working on the film, and what to expect from Season 8 of the animated TV series, Friendship is Magic.

FANDOM: How did you react when you read the script and saw the adventure was going under the sea?

Strong: I’m crazy for mermaids so the idea of us becoming sea ponies was completely exciting and I knew they sell a billion toys. I thought it was adorable and big and worthy of a feature [film].

FANDOM: Did you have any interaction with the guest actors?

Strong: My favorite sighting was Kristin Chenoweth. I met her and flipped out because I’ve completely been obsessed with her since Wicked. She was just the sweetest thing ever. I’m 5’2 and she made me feel really tall. I think she did a fantastic job; not all successful actors that have never done voiceover can jump in and really kill it, and I thought they all did. It’s sad that we don’t get to work together, but that’s typical of any animated feature.

FANDOM: What scene are you excited for fans to see for Season 8?

Strong: I’m not allowed to say! I can guarantee you there will be a lot of cuteness!

FANDOM: If any of your guest stars from the movie could appear in the TV series, who would you want to see?

Strong: I think it would be great to have Kristin back. Any of them would be welcome back and it would make sense on the show.

My Little Pony: The Movie is available Tuesday, while Season 8 of Friendship is Magic will debut this year.

‘Ducktales’ Theories: Are Lena and Magica a Bigger Threat Than We Realized?

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 06:08 PM PST

Ducktales is currently on hiatus, which means it's the perfect time to theorize about what we've seen so far. The show has already established several main foes, including Flintheart Glomgold and Ma Beagle, who are intent on besting Scrooge McDuck. But there's another pair of characters whose goal isn't as clear yet, but seems to be a greater threat: Lena and Magica De Spell. What exactly are they up to?

What Is Lena Planning?

Lena and Webby on a roof

With only two appearances so far, Lena remains mysterious. In “The Beagle Birthday Massacre!,” she meets Webby and convinces her to sneak into a party with her. However, after it turns out to be Ma Beagle's birthday party and they're almost caught, the night turns into an adventure of avoiding the Beagle Boys, during which they quickly bond.

Lena is introduced as a rebellious, globe-trotting teen with an attitude, but she genuinely cares for Webby. Their friendship is so good and pure and cute, in fact, that it comes as a shock when Lena uses her amulet to contact her supernatural Aunt Magica with the message that she's “in” with the McDuck family.

lena saves mrs beakley subway car ducktales

In “Terror of the Terra-firmians!,” we see a lot of interaction between Lena and Mrs. Beakley, Webby's grandmother. When the gang gets stuck in a subway tunnel, Beakley enlists Lena into helping her separate the subway cars. During this time, she lays into Lena, citing her to be a bad influence on the kids. Lena's ashamed when Beakley asked who raised her, which gives us a little more insight as to why she's not big on family.

Later, when the subway crushes Beakley, Lena tries to pull her free with the aid of her amulet, and while Magica tries to convince her to leave her behind, Lena still saves her. This earns Beakley's trust, and Lena informs her aunt that she's going to “play the long game.” This all boils down to one question: what plans are they trying to achieve by playing this game?

History Doesn't Repeat Itself

Minima_De_Spell ducktales comic

It's worth noting that Lena is Magica's second-known niece. Her first niece, Minima De Spell, appeared in the original Ducktales comic, Dime After Dime. While similar, Lena is a completely new character for the reboot, and so Minima isn't ultimately that important. But seeing how she helped her aunt and what her aunt was like may give us some clues about their most recent incarnations.

The original Magica was a witch obsessed with stealing Scrooge's Number One Dime so she could melt it down into an amulet that would grant its wearer the Midas Touch. While a major villain, she also often served as comic relief. The reboot's Magica, however, seems much more sinister. While we don't know why yet, she appears as a shadow attached to Lena and is dependent on her to see her plan through. Her plan must surely be more serious than just stealing a dime, though.

Two Mystery Birds, One Theory Stone

Webby and Lena are shocked

Only time and new episodes will actually tell what happens with Lena and Magica, but for now, here are a couple of theories:

Lena will grow even closer to Webby and the McDucks to the point that she's practically family. Eventually, she'll have to make a choice between Magica and the McDucks, and she'll choose the latter. As a result, she'll have to face off against Magica in an ultimate battle.

Alternatively, Lena might still be loyal to her aunt and instead try to convince Webby to join her side. Webby is very trusting of Lena, so this may lead to a lot of betrayal and conflict, both internally and with her family.

Regardless of the above, here's where the theory gets wild: Aunt Magica is somehow Della Duck. The same Della Duck that is Huey, Dewey, and Louie's mother and Donald Duck's sister. The one that mysteriously vanished after stealing the Spear of Selene from Scrooge and is a major enigma in her own right.

How Do Della and Lena Fit In?

It's a long shot, but with how complex adventure shows like Ducktales and Gravity Falls have become nowadays, I wouldn't put it past them just yet. We know so little about Magica and Della, that there's a lot of plot points to fill in. It could be possible that in the time after Della stole the spear, she was somehow corrupted and became Magica. And now evil, she seeks revenge against Scrooge, possibly for the spear incident. (Donald did hold Scrooge responsible for it in the first episode.)

And where does Lena enter? It's hard to tell. She did mention in her first appearance that she found her amulet at a thrift shop. If that's true, then maybe she met Magica only after buying it and irrevocably became a sort of “vessel” for her. Perhaps it was fate that brought Lena and Della together – they're both adventurous world travelers.

There are plenty of secrets laced throughout Ducktales, but Lena and her aunt may just be the biggest of them all.

The Top 5 Star Trek Captains

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 05:34 PM PST

When boldly going where no one has gone before, the need for a great leader is always crucial. Thankfully, Star Trek has never lacked for a charismatic captain in any iteration of the series or movies. Even the much-maligned Captain Archer from Star Trek: Enterprise wasn't a bad captain, the writing just let him, and viewers, down.

Much like the debate over the best Doctor or the best Batman, fans have argued over who is the best Star Trek captain for decades. As a self-professed Trekkie who has enjoyed all forms of the series, here is an examination of which captain we would most like to follow into the final frontier.

Captain Kathryn Janeway – Star Trek: Voyager

Besides, Enterprise, Voyager is the series that is toughest for many Trek fans to get into. While Enterprise was boring to most, Voyager could be just absurd (lizard babies, anyone?). The one constant that held that crew together, however, was Captain Janeway.

The standard strong female character may be a more recent archetype, but in the late 90s, it was Buffy Summers and Captain Janeway and that was about it. Unlike other captains in Trek lore, she offered amnesty to her enemies, held together a crew of very different ideologies, and her accolades made her the only Trek captain besides Kirk to rise to the position of admiral.

Captain James T. Kirk – Star Trek (Kelvin Timeline)

This feels like a cheat, but since it is a different version of the character, it is allowed. In the J.J. Abrams movie that split the Star Trek fandom when it created an alternate timeline instead of a full reboot, the one undeniable thing is this younger version of James T. Kirk maintains everything we loved about the chiseled veteran of the original series. This version of Kirk finally showed fans the whole story behind the Kobayashi Maru training exercise and how he bested the no-win scenario.

Captain Benjamin Sisko – Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

This one was a surprise since it was a recent big binge on Netflix. The most wonderful thing about watching Deep Space Nine as an adult is seeing Captain Benjamin Sisko play mentor, leader, and father. Being a dad of two young children helped me relate with Sisko as a man as much as a captain; something that might not have been the same watching during the original broadcast years.

More than any other Starfleet captain, Sisko knew when it was time to show compassion and when it was time for some tough love and teaching a lesson. His leadership through the Dominion War is unmatched by any other captain in Star Trek history.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard – Star Trek: The Next Generation

When one stops to think about the pressure of coming after Captain Kirk, it's admirable that Captain Picard places at the top of many of these lists. No captain went through greater growth during his run than Picard and his rapport with his crew was the greatest of them all. There is nothing he wouldn't have done for his crew and no other captain was as intellectual as a problem solver. Never a hot head, Picard always found a way to win the day without rushing head-first into a fight.

Captain James T. Kirk – Star Trek

One day, perhaps, Captain Picard will take over this spot; but it isn't this day. Most fans gravitate towards the captain they grew up watching to make the call, but not being born before the original series ended makes that point moot here. Every kid grew up wanting to be the captain of the ship with all the swagger that the ladies loved. Be it Han Solo or Captain Kirk, this formula inspired a generation to let their macho flag fly.

While not the calm diplomat Picard was nor the calm and collected leader in a war that Sisko became, Kirk always did what it takes, no matter how drastic or extreme things seemed on paper. As Doctor McCoy once said, Kirk would always turn death into a fighting chance to live. For now, that's enough for him to keep his spot at the top of the Star Trek universe.

Honorable Mention: Captain Lorca – Star Trek: Discovery

It's too early for him to make a list like this yet, but an honorable mention for Captain Lorca of Star Trek Discovery is in order. The series has only had nine episodes so far, but he is different than every other previous captain in a way that makes him intriguing. He's not a boy scout, but he isn't unlikable. He clearly has a mysterious and dark past that if explored correctly could see him knock off one of the captains above in due time.

Whether you’ve been watching America’s Next Top Model since Cycle 1 or you’re new to the reality show’s fabulous diva dramas and fashion fights, there’s been plenty of excitement both on and off the screen. With a new cycle set to return on January 9, here are 20 facts about the highs and lows of Tyra BanksAmerica’s Next Top Model.

Avon Calling?

Adrianne Curry antm

Cycle 1 winner Adrianne Curry is now an Avon Lady. She sells Avon, not as a model, but as a representative. The former contestant recently revealed that she’s so good at selling Avon that she was among the top 30 sellers nationwide.

International Love

45 countries have their own Top Model versions of the show, including Vietnam, Estonia, Mongolia, New Zealand, and Brazil. Several more countries are starting their first season of the show this year, including Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar. There are also many multi-country competitions like Asia’s Next Top Model, Caribbean’s Next Top Model, Benelux’ Next Top Model, and Africa’s Next Top Model.

America’s Next Top Chef?

The ANTM house doesn’t come with personal chefs or a cleaning crew — the contestants are responsible for doing all their own cooking and cleaning in the house.

I Will Always Love Yaya

In 2015, Cycle 3 runner-up Yaya DaCosta starred as Whitney Houston in the Lifetime biographical drama about the singer's life. The film was the directorial debut of actress Angela Bassett. Since her elimination from the reality show, DaCosta has appeared in several films and TV shows and currently has a starring role in the NBC series Chicago Med.

Smells Like ANTM

ANTM has its own perfume. Called Dream Come True, the fragrance is described as "an upbeat, optimistic, and sweet fragrance, designed to evoke the glorious moment of victory."

Hermione Your Own Business

Sophie Sumner, runner-up of Britain’s Next Top Model's Cycle 5 and winner of Cycle 18 of America’s Next Top Model, once lived with British Harry Potter actress Emma Watson. The pair met when they both attended the private boarding school for girls, Headington School, and have been friends ever since.

Musical Model

In 2008, Cycle 5 winner Lisa D’Amato launched a rap, electro-rap, and hip-hop music career. She has since released two albums, collaborated with Grammy-nominated record producer Cisco Adler on several tracks, and performed at Coachella, SXSW, and various clubs around Hollywood and Vegas.

A Wink and a Nod

antm elyse-sewell

In Cycle 1, ANTM judge Janice Dickinson liked Elyse Sewell so much that she would wink at her whenever the contestant was safe. In the final three, when the judges returned from deliberation, Janice shook her head at Elyse before the announcement so Sewell knew she was about to be eliminated.

Nigel’s Model Past

The mother of ANTM judge and photographer Nigel Barker was a former Miss Sri Lanka contestant. This early exposure to modeling reportedly played a big role in Barker’s respect for the profession.

Tyra Who?

tyra banks

Contestants only see Tyra once a week. Despite the limited time with the contestants, the aspiring models all appreciate the time she gives. In an article for Bustle, Cycle 9 contestant Sarah Hartshorne revealed “I only saw her once a week, and there were a lot of us and only one of her, but she was always very nice and insanely knowledgeable about basically everything. Tyra Banks should be the mayor.”

A Winning Winner

Cycle 15 winner Ann Ward was the first contestant to rank first among the models for the first five weeks of the show.

The Biggest Loser

Cycle 10 winner Whitney Thompson landed in the bottom two a total of four times, making her the winner with most bottom two appearances.

Sci-Fi Models

In 2011, Tyra Banks released a YA sci-fi fantasy book titled Modelland which was loosely based on her modeling experience.

A Contestant With Balls

Keith Carlos

Cycle 21 winner Keith Carlos had a short-lived career in the NFL, having signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011 and the New York Giants in 2013.

Maybe Stick to Modelling?

The final six contestants of Cycle 2 appeared in Tyra Banks’ music video "Shake Ya Body." Later, Tyra bashed her music career on Watch What Happens Live, saying, "Let me just do a public service announcement right now. My name is Tyra Banks and I'm here to tell you that you may have a dream, you may have something that burns inside of your heart and desire — but if you do not have the talent for it, boo, let it go."

A Different Kind of Therapy

Cycle 9 winner Saleisha Stowers made an appearance in Robin Thicke’s 2009 music video “Sex Therapy.”

Blood and Struts

Despite how the aspiring model was depicted on the show, Cycle 12 runner-up Allison Harvard wasn't really obsessed with blood. She says her comments were edited out of context. In a Reddit AMA, the former contestant revealed, “Editing is truly ridiculous. Before everything was spliced up–I had prefaced that statement with my fascination in forensics–and–genetic blood disorders. I used to want to be a mortician and I have always been intrigued by human anatomy. Blood is interesting to me but I never meant for it to come out like a Halloween-esque statement."

Internet Famous

In her teens, Allison Harvard was also an internet meme known as “Creepy Chan.” The future ANTM contestant was active on sites like DeviantArt and Flickr in the mid-2000s for sharing her art and creepy photos which caught the attention of the internet.

When Tyra Met Miss J

Tyra and Miss J first met backstage at a runway show. The pair quickly became friends when Miss J helped Tyra perfect her catwalk strut. Tyra was also responsible for giving the future ANTM runway coach the nickname “Queen of the Catwalk.”

Beauty Comes In All Ages

For the first time in the reality TV show’s 15 years on air, this year's America’s Next Top Model removed the age limit for applicants. In previous years, applicants had to be 27 years or under, but now the title is up for grabs for anyone over the age of 18.

America’s Next Top Model Cycle 24 premieres on January 9 on VH1.

‘Three Billboards’ Director and Star React to Awards Buzz

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 08:01 AM PST

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has emerged as the most decorated film at this year's Golden Globes ceremony, winning a total of four awards. Not only did the Martin McDonagh-directed film pick up the gong for Best Picture, but it also went home with Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor wins for stars Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell, as well as Best Screenplay for McDonagh.

FANDOM spoke to Martin McDonagh and Sam Rockwell about the awards buzz surrounding the film, and McDonagh wasn't coy about telling us he keeps abreast of all the chatter as talk turns to Oscar chances.

"I Google every single thing, to be honest, and as we go from 13th place to 12th place I think yes…!" he said. "For a film like this which is kind of dark and funny and you hope will find as big an audience as it can, that stuff can only help. I've been through that process a little bit, and it's kind of silly but it's kind of fun too — to go to the Oscars. So I'm kind of looking forward to it, but because I love Fran and Sam so much I really hope that they'll be recognised."

Sam Rockwell, who plays local police officer Jason Dixon in the film, offered his thoughts on why awards recognition is important to him.

"I think its great that the movie's getting recognition, and it's really exciting. you know what I mean?" he said. "It deserves it, I think it's a really great film. It's just nice to hear that. It's great stuff. I mean, anything that gets people to see the movie and get it out there as much as possible is great."

If you've yet to see Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, here's the official synopsis:

After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson), the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command, Officer Dixon – an immature mother's boy with a penchant for violence – gets involved , the battle is only exacerbated.

The film also stars Peter Dinklage, Abbie Cornish and Caleb Landry Jones. It hits screens in the UK on January 12.

What the 2017 Golden Globes Mean For the Oscars

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 07:44 AM PST

How Hollywood’s second biggest award ceremony might influence the upcoming Academy Awards.

Three Billboards is Now the Hot Favourite

Christopher Nolan’s WWII epic Dunkirk was the frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar, with Steven Spielberg’s The Post and Jordan Peele’s Get Out also in the fight. But having won the Golden Globe for Best Drama, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is now the hot favourite. Martin McDonagh’s film — which revolves around a mother’s efforts to gain justice for her murdered daughter — also took home the award for Best Screenplay (McDonaugh) Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell) and Best Actress…

Francis McDormand Will Win Best Actress

Frances McDormand in Three Billboards.

Saoirse Roanan delivers a stunning performance in Lady Bird, and she rightly won the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at the Globes. But Three Billboards features a career-best turn from Francis McDormand, and winning in the Drama category means the momentum is now with her, and she’ll take a second Academy Award to put next to her Fargo Oscar.

Best Director is an Open Race

The smart money is still on Nolan winning the director award for his stunning work on Dunkirk. But having won the award at the Golden Globes for The Shape of Water, Guillermo Del Toro is now a contender. Thanks to Three Billboards’ success last night, Martin McDonagh is now very definitely in the running, while Greta Gerwig is an interesting outside bet for Lady Bird. But in spite of last night’s shut-out, you still get the feeling that this is Nolan’s year.

Gary Oldman Will Win Best Actor

Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour.

Gary Oldman is one of the greatest actors never to have won an Academy Award. But that will change next month. The star of Leon, The Fifth Element, and the Dark Knight trilogy was previously nominated for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy but lost out to Jean Durjardin in The Artist. Oldman’s masterful portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour won him the acting award at the GGs however, and will see him victorious at the Oscars on March 4.

Don’t Write Off Get Out

Get Out left the Golden Globes empty-handed. But don’t write it off off just yet. The horror movie — which FANDOM named our film of the year — is beautifully written and directed, so has a chance on both those fronts. It’s also an incendiary feature, tackling race issues head-on. And with Hollywood in reflective mood these the last few months, and the Golden Globes filled with political statements, we reckon Get Out could yet surprise everyone in the Best Picture category.

The Academy Awards are handed out on March 4.

Why ‘Get Out’ Deserves ALL the Oscars
