Vance Joy Uses Three Words To Describe ‘Nation of Two,’ Taylor Swift, Skateboarding, & More

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 03:42 PM PST

By Maura O’Malley

Vance Joy has a lot to celebrate. He recently released two new songs ("Lay It On Me" and "Like Gold"), and his sophomore album, Nation of Two, drops in just over a month.

And while you know Vance Joy as the tall Aussie who plays guitar and sings folksy, often romantic songs with a hint of vibrato, you may not know him as a former gardener, law student, or the next Tony Hawk. (Okay, so he only recently learned how to skate, but who knows—he could end up giving some of those original Z-Boys a run for their money some day!)

In our exclusive interview below, get to know the many sides of Vance Joy, from his days as Taylor Swift's 1989 World Tour opener to the days preceding the release of his upcoming album, Nation of Two.

Did we mention he manages to dish on each topic in just three words? Because he does. (See what we did there?)

Nation of Two drops Feb. 23 via Atlantic.

The Detroit rapper has fired back at critics of his most recent full-length with a scathing new verse on the newly released “Chloraseptic” remix featuring 2 Chainz and Phresher.

“Y’all saw the tracklist and had a fit,” Em spits. “Before you heard it/So you formed your verdict/While you sat with your arms crossed/Did your little reaction videos and talked over songs.”

Revival‘s wack, I don’t like the zombie track…/Where’s all the content at?/What’s with all the conscious rap?/Pink, Beyoncé this, and Kehlani that/I just add it to the fuel in my rocket pack,” he adds later in the track.

“This is the first tape Kurt gave to me. Sound quality is not perfect but it’s not too bad. It is listenable. Paper cuts sounds a little warbaly at first and that is exactly how it was when Kurt gave it to me,” Purkey writes of his first upload. “I got used to it. It slowly becomes clear sounding.”

Bennington’s widow Talinda re-tweeted a message to that effect from a WBR staffer and assured fans that they would still receive the items. She explained that there are currently new tenants in the house, and revealed that a special tribute is planned for Chester’s birthday, which is March 20.

Thank you for all of your love & support,” she wrote. “Our family will receive all of your cards and gifts still. And we deeply appreciate them.”

“We have moved into a new home…and the well meaning fans that still come to the house, are disturbing our tenants. We (our family & the band) are deciding on the best place for a permanent memorial. It's a big decision and your respect & patience is appreciated. We love you all.”

Talking Heads’ David Byrne Announces New Solo Album ‘American Utopia’

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 02:26 PM PST

By Scott T. Sterling

David Byrne is back.

The legendary Talking Heads frontman has revealed an upcoming solo album, American Utopia, which is slated for release on March 9.

The album announcement arrived with the first taste of new music, the upbeat and danceable track “Everybody’s Coming to My House.” Listen to it below.

While announcing the release, Byrne shared a lengthy explanation behind the inspiration and meaning of this latest project:

“These songs don't describe an imaginary or possibly impossible place but rather attempt to depict the world we live in now. Many of us, I suspect, are not satisfied with that world—the world we have made for ourselves. We look around and we ask ourselves—well, does it have to be like this? Is there another way? These songs are about that looking and that asking,” he said in a prepared statement.

This album is indirectly about those aspirational impulses,” he continued. “Sometimes to describe is to reveal, to see other possibilities. To ask a question is to begin the process of looking for an answer. To be descriptive is also to be prescriptive, in a way. The act of asking is a big step. The songs are sincere—the title is not ironic. The title refers not to a specific utopia, but rather to our longing, frustration, aspirations, fears, and hopes regarding what could be possible, what else is possible. The description, the discontent and the desire—I have a feeling that is what these songs touch on.”

“I have no prescriptions or surefire answers, but I sense that I am not the only one looking and asking, wondering and still holding onto some tiny bit of hope, unwilling to succumb entirely to despair or cynicism,” he concluded. “It's not easy, but music helps. Music is a kind of model—it often tells us or points us toward how we can be.”

For the love of Kelly Clarkson!

While she didn’t appear in the movie, Kelly Clarkson will forever be connected to 2005 movie, The 40-Year-Old Virgin. It’s thank to one of the movie’s most famous scenes, which finds star Steve Carell suffering through a blindingly painful chest-waxing session.

Among a slew of colorful expletives Carell’s character spews during the scene, one of the most memorable is when the actor blurts out Clarkson’s name after having another chunk of hair ripped from his chest.

Almost 13 years later, and Clarkson and Carell have finally met to laugh about the legendary film scene. The two came together at last night’s (Dec. 7) Golden Globes, and both shared their meeting on social media.

“Finally,” Carell said on Twitter alongside a photo of the two posing together.

“One of my favorite moments of my life! I love you and your lovely wife!,” Clarkson shared on Twitter with Carell’s post, adding the hashtag #ahhhhhhhstevecarell.

See the tweets below.

In a 2017 interview with Today, Clarkson called the movie scene as “pretty hilarious,” and was bummed that she had yet to meet Carell.

“I have yet to meet Steve Carell, and I want to be like, 'So, was it a compliment? I don't know, you're in pain, and you think of Kelly Clarkson,'” she said.

Here’s hoping she finally got her answer.

Football fans who tuned into Saturday night’s (January 6) NFL playoff game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Los Angeles Rams heard a snippet of a brand new song from Carrie Underwood. The song, titled “The Champion,” was written by Underwood exclusively for the Super Bowl.

Related: Carrie Underwood Needed 40 Facial Stitches After November Accident

In an interview last year with Variety, it was revealed that Underwood wrote the song at the urging of Sunday Night Football‘s executive producer, Fred Gaudelli.

“I think it's going to become a sports anthem,” Gaudelli told Variety. “It's going to be one of those songs that you see cut to highlights for the next 25 years.”

The empowering anthem has Underwood belting the lyrics, “I am invincible, unbreakable, unstoppable, unshakable,” alongside slick beats. While the full song has yet to be played, Underwood’s husband Mike Fisher got an early preview.

“My husband loved it,” Underworld says of Fisher, who played with NHL team the Nashville Predators before retiring after last season. “He would listen to it before playoff games. He was like 'I want everyone to hear it!' and I had to tell him, 'You can't do that. You can't play it in the locker room. I'm sorry.' But that was a good indicator that we were on the right track.”

“The Champion” will arrive on Jan. 12. Listen to the preview below.

Carey was delayed by a trip to the bathroom during a commercial break and grabbed the first seat she saw when she returned. Unfortunately for the singer, the seat happened to be reserved for a very famous actress.

“Got caught mingling on the way to the loo during a commercial break,” she tweeted. “Took the first seat available, happens to be right next to Steven Spielberg. Cut to next commercial break, guess who comes back to her seat…”

The pop diva profusely apologized to the legendary actress: “Dear Meryl, please forgive me!!! You can take my seat any time!”

Carey also praised Oprah and congratulated the Best Original Song winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul for writing “This is Me” for The Greatest Showman.

Biel was nominated for her role on The Sinner, a whodunnit mystery about a woman who seems to commit a brutal crime for no reason. Radiohead Sue Lana Del Rey Over ‘Creep’ Similarity

Radiohead have filed suit against Lana Del Rey for allegedly ripping off their career-launching 1992 hit “Creep.”

Del Rey confirmed the news via Twitter, following rumors that the British group was taking legal action over similarities between their song and Lana’s “Get Free.”

“It's true about the lawsuit,” she wrote. “Although I know my song wasn't inspired by ‘Creep,’ Radiohead feel it was and want 100% of the publishing – I offered up to 40 over the last few months but they will only accept 100. Their lawyers have been relentless, so we will deal with it in court.”

This won’t be the first time “Creep” has entered the litigation arena. Radiohead were previously sued for the similarities between “Creep” and The Hollies’ 1974 single “The Air That I Breathe.” Radiohead lost the lawsuit and Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood are now listed as “Creep” co-writers.

Madonna, Mariah & More Support #TimesUp Blackout at Golden Globes

The 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards were held last night (Jan. 7) and to protest harassment and mistreatment in the workplace, stars wore black in support of the newly formed #TimesUp legal defense fund. The ceremony was peppered with references to disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein, actor Kevin Spacey and other high-profile men who stand accused of illegal and offensive behavior.

On Twitter, artists who attended the event and those who weren’t part of this year’s ceremony shared their support for #TimesUp with blackout photos of their own. Madonna wore a mask reading “Time’s Up…B——” and wrote, “I've been saying this for years!!!! Finally some solidarity!”

Mariah Carey, who attended the Globes as a nominee for The Star, wrote that she’s “very proud” to support the movement. Actors, directors, composers and more made the Globes’ diamond-and-gold anniversary one to remember — culminating during Oprah Winfrey’s powerful Cecil B. DeMille Award acceptance speech.

David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ Demo Released to Celebrate Birthday

An early demo of one of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” has been released on what would have been the artist’s 71st birthday.

The funky pop song was featured on the 1983 album of the same name, and the demo is raw but easily recognizable despite its lack of background vocals, horns, lush production and guitar solo by Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Bowie recorded the demo with Nile Rodgers on December 19 and 20, 1982, in Switzerland after Rodgers flew to Bowie’s home to work on some tunes. Excited by their progress, they decided to track the songs immediately and scrambled to enlist a band to assist at Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland.

Rodgers considers his experiences working with Bowie to be some of the greatest of his life.

“I’ve been blessed with a wonderful career but my creative partnership with David Bowie ranks very, very, very high on the list of my most important and rewarding collaborations,” Rodgers said in a press release. “This demo gives the fans a bird’s eye view of the very start of it! I woke up on my first morning in Montreux with David peering over me. He had an acoustic guitar in his hands and exclaimed, ‘Nile, darling, I think this is a HIT!'”

Rodgers mixed the original demo shortly before Christmas of 2017. In retrospect, he said the song was the first hint of how innovative and exciting it would be to work with Bowie.

“I took his ‘folk song’ and arranged it into something that the entire world would soon be dancing to and seemingly has not stopped dancing to for the last 35 years,” Rodgers said. “It became the blueprint not only for ‘Let’s Dance’ the song but for the entire album as well.”
