LONDON: Russia's imminent return from a doping suspension will not be derailed because its hockey players sang their national anthem, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said.
The Russian men's team defied IOC rules by belting out the anthem at their medal ceremony following Sunday's 4-3 overtime win against Germany in the gold-medal game. Russian fans at the match also sang along.
"We understand that this was over excitement by the athletes who had just won a gold medal in extraordinary circumstances," the IOC said.

LONDON: If you do not know the problem with Arsene Wenger, you have not been paying attention. Wenger was a great football manager. He no longer is.
Wenger was an innovator, a man with ideas and methods that provided Arsenal with a competitive advantage. Armed with superior physical preparation and more astute recruitment than his domestic opponents, Wenger won the Premier League in his first full campaign as Arsenal manager. He would win two more in the next six seasons, culminating with the 2003-04 "Invincibles."

ATHENS: Greece on Monday closed the Corinth canal after a rockfall that followed heavy rain, temporarily blocking a transit route used mainly by commercial ships and pleasure yachts.
The 6.4-km canal serves about 11,000 ships a year, offering a short transit from southern Italy to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea, saving mariners a 700-km (434-mile) journey around the Peloponnese Peninsula. But its 21.5-meter (64-foot) width means it is not a key waterway for ocean-going vessels.
