After the completion of their tour in September 1978, the Beach Boys returned to the studio to record a new album, ''L.A (Light Album). ''However, Brian Wilson was unwilling and unable to contribute to the album, and with this realization, the rest of the band hired back Bruce Johnston, who returned as a member after leaving in 1971. The resulting album, finished in January 1979, would be a flop, charting only 100 in the US and 32 in the UK, despite having decent successes with "Good Timin'", "Lady Lynda", and "Here Comes The Night".

After a few pre-tour gigs at Radio City in March, the tour would last from April through October, and contained 70 gigs. Brian Wilson was still willing to tour, and he participated. The tour started out with a US leg, lasting from April through July 1979, which would be successful, but during a seven-night stand at the Universal Amphitheater (June 8), Dennis Wilson and Mike Love got in an on-stage fist-fight, which resulted in Dennis being fired from the band. The tour went on, sideman Bobby Figueroa became the new drummer, with the first leg closing with a series of shows at Disneyland. Afterwards, in August the band took their first visit to Japan, supported by Heart, which only lasted 3 gigs (a 4th was planned but cancelled when the roof collapsed as Heart were performing), before closing out the tour with two more US legs, one in August-September and one in September-October.
