A Brown University summer course will allow students to “explore the history of white resistance to racial equity in the U.S.,” and offer evidence of the "whitelash" that gave President Donald J. Trump a victory in the presidential election.
Part of its pre-college program for high-schoolers offered during Brown's annual "Summer@Brown" program, prospective students can choose "Resistance to Racial Equality from the Civil War to Donald Trump" as their three-week on-campus course.
According to Campus Reform, the course will examine the racial elements of Trump's election, which it calls a "whitelash," meaning a "staunch white resistance to, and even revenge against, racial equity."
From CR: "Without the pressure of formal grades and credit, students can immerse themselves in subjects they choose and experience the satisfying challenges of college-level academics," a description for the program explains, inviting students to choose from a selection of at least 220 courses, including one on "fake news," and another on Critical Race Theory.
"After the two-term presidency of Barack Obama–the first black man to hold that office–was the election of Donald Trump a surprise? To many people, it was," the course description begins, saying that for those who "believe in this story of consistent racial progress, Trump's successful campaign, fueled as it was by white nationalist supporters, was very surprising."
The description goes on to suggest, however, that Trump's presidency "is not an outlier, but rather emblematic of a deeply rooted tradition of American politics," noting that "some observers have called this brand of American politics 'whitelash.'"

A California woman has pleaded guilty Wednesday to an unspeakable crime involving the torture and premeditated murder of her 6-year-old nephew and 3-year-old niece. The children died after suffering brutal beatings and starvation.
The beatings occurred in a Salinas apartment, where Tami Joy Huntsman admittedly killed her niece and nephew in 2015, according to KSBW.
From the news outlet: Shaun Tara, 6, and his sister Delylah Tara, 3 were starved and abused for months at the hands of Huntsman and her teenage boyfriend, Gonzalo Curiel, prosecutors said.
Their bodies were found hidden in a Redding, Calif. storage facility on December 14, 2015.
The report indicates that the boyfriend, Gonzalo Curiel, is also charged with torture and murder, but he is facing a separate trial and has pleaded not guilty. He was a minor at the time of the killings, however, he will be tried as an adult.
Monterey County prosecutor Steve Somers said the abuse and murders of Delylah and Shaun happened because their 9-year-old sister, referred to as “Jane Doe,” “stole” a bagel on Thanksgiving.
In a confession read by a judge in court Wednesday, Huntsman wrote, “I willfully failed to provide adequate food to Jane Doe, Sean, and Delylah, causing them to suffer from starvation. I willfully failed to provide adequate shelter for Jane Doe, Sean, and Delylah, causing them to suffer hypothermia from being confined in a wet cement shower for extended periods of time. I violently battered Jane Doe, Sean , and Delylah. I willfully permitted Gonzalo to do each of the above-listed acts. I intended to kill Sean and Delylah. I intended to inflict extreme physical pain and suffering on Jane Doe, Sean, and Delylah for a sadistic purpose. Sean and Delylah died during the commission of the crime of torture.”
From the report: Huntsman and Curiel left their Salinas apartment the day after Thanksgiving in the middle of the night. They drove the two bodies, and the severely injured 9-year-old girl, 300 miles north.
The 9-year-old girl was rescued two weeks later when Plumas County sheriff’s deputies found her in a locked vehicle in Quincy, Calif., and she was rushed to a hospital.
Huntsman will be sentenced on April 25.
Curiel’s jury trial is set to begin April 8.

After allegedly using his security detail to perform personal errands, Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin is likely to be the subject of an Inspector General investigation, weakening his already tenuous position in the Trump administration.
"I wouldn't call him a dead man walking," said a source close to the investigation, "but it's close to that."
The Inspector General report is expected to allege that Shulkin misused public resources to perform personal errands, and may be published within two weeks, according to The Hill.
The White House is maintaining public support for Shulkin, referring questions on the report to the VA and pointing to White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ comments this week at a press briefing when contacted for comment by The Daily Beast.
"The President is glad for the job that [Shulkin]'s been doing in reforming the VA and modernizing the VA,” Sanders said Thursday.
The news comes on the heels of a separate IG investigation that found that Shulkin and his wife traveled to the Wimbledon tennis tournament last year while Shulkin’s chief of staff attempted to cover up the expenses.

On February 14, 2018, a former student entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and began shooting at teachers and students. In the end, he killed 17 innocent people.
One of the victims, Meadow Pollack was an 18-year-old senior with a bright future ahead of her. But because the school was not secured properly, Meadow's future was cut short.
Her father Andrew Pollack is on a mission.
Andrew says he wants to be the last dad to bury a child because of a school shooting. Therefore, he, his sons, and thousands of Americans are joining forces to aggressively pressure lawmakers to take action and make schools safe.
Andrew has launched the website RememberMeadow.com, where he will be providing updates and asking you to assist him by joining his fight for safe schools. All you have to do is visit the website, and LIKE Andrew's Facebook page and take action when called upon. This will include making phone calls and sending emails to lawmakers when necessary.
In addition, Dennis Michael Lynch asks you to help remember Meadow by donating to the development of a children's playground named in her honor. The playground will be built on property donated by a local Jewish temple in Coral Springs, Fl.
Your donations will help build this safe playground & garden for children to enjoy. NOTE: 100% of the donations will go directly to the playground; all donations are tax deductible.
DML has given Andrew access to his Facebook page which reaches more than 1,000,000 people so that he can provide updates whenever he needs to get the message out. Below is his first video.

A vehicle rammed into a White House barricade on Feb. 23, driven by a woman later identified as Jessica R. Ford, 35, of La Vergne, Tenn. Her family is claiming that Ford is mentally ill and needs treatment.
Armed with a gun, the late February incident was Ford’s “fourth and most dramatic effort to gain access to the White House in recent months,” according to KGUN9. Ford is facing three felony charges.
From the news outlet: The question of why Ford did what she did was no mystery. Her family said she suffers from a mental illness and that they actually warned the Secret Service last week that Ford, armed with a BB gun, was again headed for the White House.
The 35-year-old insists her children live in the White House and told the judge [on Thursday during an appearance] in court that her fiance is the President.
“She is very delusional. She thinks her children are in the White House. That’s why she keeps going up there,” said Victoria Walls, Fords’ cousin.
According to the report, Ford’s latest attempt to get to the White House was made because she thought it was the holiday season.
“She decided when she left (last week) it was Christmas Eve, and I got to be there by Christmas Day,” said her mother Alice Wilson.
The report says authorities were on the lookout for Ford after her family warned them that Ford had plans to ram a gate. Despite her family’s warnings, Ford still proceeded with her plan, but the Secret Service was waiting.
“I think that’s the reason they didn’t kill her. They knew she was coming,” said Wilson.
KGUN9 reports that Ford may go to prison or, due to her mental health issues, she may be released. She faces three felony counts for ramming the White House barrier and could be sentenced to up to 40 years in prison.

After being reported missing on Friday evening, a Kentucky police officer has been found dead.
Kentucky State Police were notified at approximately 9:15 p.m. CST that a police officer from Hickman was missing. Following overnight operations by search and rescue teams and various agencies from Kentucky and Tennessee, the body of Rodney Smith, 45, of the Hickman Police Department was found in a flooded field.
Smith’s police cruiser was discovered nearby, WENK-WTPR reported. It remains unclear how Smith became separated from his cruiser.
Smith, of Boaz, Kentucky, was last seen Friday night while on duty. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Fulton County coroner, and his body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy, which is scheduled for Saturday.
Jody Cash, a Kentucky State Police Trooper, told the Associated Press that an investigation into Smith’s death is underway, but there was no indication of foul play.
Heavy rains this week caused flooding from the Ohio River and left hundreds of homes in Kentucky without power.

Six teenagers are running for governor in Kansas, one of whom contends that “old man principles,” such as those held by current elected officials, are not working for the country.
In a Saturday interview with The Washington Post, Republican candidate Tyler Ruzich, 17, said that the founding fathers envisioned a country where citizens his age could hold positions of responsibility and authority. He also took a swipe at President Donald Trump, asserting it was unlikely that the founding fathers considered that a reality television star would become president.
"You know, lots of people ask me, what can you, Tyler Ruzich, do for people my age?" Ruzich said. “I say, we keep continuing these old man principles that aren't working. In [Alexander] Hamilton's time, someone my age could be commander of a frigate. Did the founding fathers consider that a 17-year-old might be governor? I don't know.”
Ruzich added, “Did they consider that a reality-television businessman would become president of the United States after losing the popular vote? Probably not."
The Hill reported: Ruzich is one of six teenagers who filed to run in the state after a report from The Kansas City Star in November revealed the state had no requirements for running for governor.
"Because I cannot point to a law that sets any qualifications to run for governor. So a dog has never tried to file — I don't know what would happen if one tried to. … I can't point you to a law that says anything about the qualifications to run for governor,” said Bryan Caskey, an official at the Kansas secretary of state’s office last year.
The resulting media stories led to a flurry of candidates, including one dog, 3-year-old Angus Woolley, whose owner filed for the dog to run in February. State officials reacted with a bill establishing age and species requirements for running for governor.
"We have age requirements on voters," Rep. Keith Esau (R), told the Kansas City Star. "Anybody who's running should be able to vote for themselves."

The couple who was arrested when authorities found that they were living in unhealthy conditions with their three teens appeared in court Friday, facing charges of child abuse after the kids were found in a 20′ x 10′ x 4′ plywood box in the California desert.
The teens were handed over to Children and Family Services, but according to friends of the family, the parents were living in the middle of the desert because they are extremely poor, not abusive.
After appearing in court Friday, the parents also say they're innocent, both pleading not guilty to three felony counts of child abuse.
From People: Daniel Panico, 73, and Mona Kirk, 51, appeared at Joshua Tree Superior Court on Friday where they plead not guilty to three charges of child abuse, ABC-7 reported.
The report continues: Panico told Judge Swift he was confused as to why they had been arrested, The San Bernardino Sun reported. "I am wondering why all this is happening," he said
"I want to say something — it's ridiculous," he added, The Los Angeles Times reported.
The couple’s neighbor, Mike Reynolds, told CBS that the couple had lost their house, "So he bought that lot and bought that trailer and moved up."
"There's people out there in the gutters raising their kids in less environment, in cardboard boxes and having to go to the bathroom in the gutters and they don't get arrested," Reynolds said. "They need help but they're not getting arrested. My goodness, he's living on his own property."
Another family friend, Leanna Munroe, told The Los Angeles Times: "The Sheriff's Department is punishing those kids for being homeless."
The couple is expected to be in court on Tuesday, and their bail has been set at $300,000 each.

Former FBI director James Comey reportedly held a secret meeting with Obama in the Oval Office on Jan. 5, 2017, just two weeks before Obama left office – a meeting Comey never reported to Congress.
This week the Daily Caller News Foundation released a letter they had received from the FBI, in which the FBI refused to expedite release of documents related to secret meetings between former President Obama and Comey, which the DCNF had requested under the Freedom of Information Act.
The FBI’s refusal to hand over the documents has created even more questions about possible information still being hidden.
Additionally, in January, Deputy Director Andrew McCabe stepped down from his role at the FBI, amid backlash incurred in the “Russian collusion” investigation and his interactions with anti-Trump agents caught in a texting scandal.
We want your honest opinion. Amid all the scandals uncovered in the FBI over the past year, do you still trust the agency?

Legendary evangelical minister Billy Graham was laid to rest this week, but former president Barack Obama did not attend any of the memorial services for the spiritual leader.
In all, three former presidents were not in attendance at Graham’s memorial or funeral services. Jimmy Carter and George HW Bush did not personally appear, but both are 93 years old and are dealing with severe health issues.
Obama’s spokesperson notified the press he would not be attending, but there was no specific reason given for his absence.
President Donald J. Trump attended a memorial for Graham at the U.S. Capitol, as the reverend’s body lay in honor, a rare occurrence for civilians. Trump also attended Graham's funeral on Friday afternoon.
Former President George W. Bush and Bill Clinton both paid their respects to the Graham family in North Carolina last week, according to The Daily Caller.
As for Obama, he was in Chicago this week dodging concerns about the construction of his presidential center and downplaying fears of gentrification.
From the DC: The former president attended a community meeting of southside neighborhood residents in Chicago to assure them that the Obama Presidential Library would not impede or "gentrify" their neighborhood, according to the Chicago Tribune.
During the community gathering at McCormick Place, Obama dismissed concerns saying the Chicago media is giving coverage to that "one person who was unhappy" with the plans, despite "what the other 99 people say."
Obama asserted, "You can never make folks 100 percent happy."
Obama did tweet about Grahams’s passing, writing on Feb. 21: Billy Graham was a humble servant who prayed for so many – and who, with wisdom and grace, gave hope and guidance to generations of Americans.

While recording footage for a documentary, a Swedish broadcast journalist was called a "damn whore" and told by locals not to film in Stockholm’s “no-go” suburb of Rinkeby.
An employee of Swedish public broadcaster SVT, Anna-Klara Bankel, was impugned as she attempted to interview inhabitants of the no-go zone regarding the effectiveness of recently introduced CCTV cameras aimed at combating drug dealing and other crimes in the area.
According to Breitbart, as Bankel was trying to speak with locals in Rinkeby’s main square, a man shouted, "Go away! You cannot film here. Damn it!"
Bankel replied. "Yes … there is a little unpleasant mood when you stand here."
Shop owners who were interviewed by the television crew said that the CCTV cameras had done nothing to stop the drug dealing in the area as dealers had simply resorted to hiding drugs in the shops themselves.
Two shop workers told Ms. Bankel: "We usually report it. They hide everywhere, you cannot do anything. They do not care about the cameras in the store." When asked if they had confronted the dealers they claimed they had, but said: "They get angry and threaten us."
The square in which Bankel was harassed is the same area in which an Australian television crew from Channel Nine was attacked in March 2016. The Australians, who were filming on the subject of how mass migration had affected the area, were punched, kicked, and even pushed by a car.
Bankel is also not the first Swedish journalist to be attacked or harassed in the square. Last year, a photographer from Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter was attacked by several men and had his camera stolen while trying to photograph rioting. The photo-journalist reported having to make his own way to the nearest hospital as police claimed there were no patrols in the area.

On Wednesday, U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Champlain Station in upstate New York thwarted an alien smuggling attempt. Included in the group of smuggled aliens was a man who had been deported to China less than a year ago, and the smuggler himself had been ordered to be deported in 2013.
"This arrest is a great example of the vigilance our Border Patrol agents display on a daily basis," said Champlain Station Patrol Agent in Charge Norm Lague. "Their quick response foiled a smuggling attempt and prevented a previously deported alien from illegally re-entering the United States."
U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported: During the early evening hours of February 28, the Tactical Communications Center of the Swanton Border Sector detected two people walking through a field towards the international border near the port of entry.
A Border Patrol agent in the area observed a black Toyota Tacoma with Massachusetts license plates drive north on 276, and soon afterwards another agent observed the same vehicle driving south. Agents performed a traffic stop and observed the vehicle contained four people. During questioning, two occupants in the back seat admitted to just illegally entering the United States. Agents arrested all four and transported them to the Champlain Border Patrol Station for additional record checks and processing.
Records revealed that the driver, Ciao Cesar Faria de Souza, 27, a citizen of Brazil, was ordered deported from the United States in 2013. The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York is charging Faria de Souza with Alien Smuggling, a felony under 8 USC 1324. Records checks also revealed that one of the smuggled aliens, Va Meng Joe, 53, born in China, has a lengthy criminal record. On September 5, 2017, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported him to China. The U.S. Attorney is charging Joe with Re-Entry after Removal, a felony under 8 USC 1326.
The other smuggled alien, Elianay Goncalves-Carreiro, 32, is a citizen of Brazil. Record checks revealed that he has no immigration or criminal history in the United States. He is charged with Illegal Entry, a misdemeanor under 8 USC 1325. There were no charges filed for the fourth individual.

A former pastor from Waco, Texas, who was known for his work in fighting against human trafficking was arrested Thursday on a prostitution charge.
Edward Ignacio Espinosa, 41, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge stemming from a police investigation at a massage parlor. The operator of the establishment is accused of human trafficking.
According to Fox News, Espinosa was caught after an investigation targeting two massage parlors began between September and November of last year. In video footage, investigators saw "hundreds of men paying for sex acts during massages," which led to a December raid.
Fox reports: The alleged business operator, Chun Yang Zhang, 47, was charged with human trafficking and accused of forcing women "who were all Asian and didn't speak English" to engage in prostitution.
Espinosa was held at McLennan County jail Thursday afternoon on a $1,000 bond. By Thursday night he was released, authorities said.
Espinosa resigned from Antioch Community Church in December after admitting that he had paid for sex at a massage parlor following an internal church investigation. He had been with the church for eight years.
KWTX reports that Jimmy Seibert, senior pastor of Antioch Community Church, said: "Our hearts are broken over any and all sexual exploitation of women. As a community, we have been committed to not only stand against it but to assist in the rescue and healing process for anyone victimized by sexual abuse or exploitation."

In the midst of financial hardship, the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee have paid Hillary Clinton’s “resistance” organization nearly $900,000 for list acquisitions.
According to Federal Election Commission filings, on Jan. 8, the DNC paid $300,000 to Onward Together for “list acquisition,” even as state Democratic parties were awaiting $10 million in funding for rebuilding efforts that was due to them in July.
The Washington Free Beacon reported: As of early January of this year, the money had never made its way to the parties, and the DNC did not even have $10 million on hand. In late January, after reports surfaced of its inaction in relation to the state parties, the DNC finally announced it would begin disbursing $1 million to 11 different state parties, with grants going to Arizona, Idaho, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington, and West Virginia.
The DCCC also paid hundreds of thousands to Clinton’s “resistance” group for “generic committee list rental” between mid-December and late January. On Dec. 12, the DCCC disbursed $286,689.34 to Onward Together for the list rentals. In January, two more payments were made to Clinton’s group in the amounts of $139,242.20 and $145,882.40 for the rentals.
Clinton launched Onward Together in April of last year after saying that she intended to be a part of the “resistance” against President Donald Trump.

Voters in Texas are setting records for early voting in a non-presidential primary election year, and Democrats are voting in larger numbers. They’ve cast over 20,000 more ballots than Republicans so far.
According to The Hill: More than 602,000 voters have cast ballots in the largest counties through Wednesday. That total includes votes cast in both Democratic and Republican primaries, with more ballots cast by Democrats than Republicans.
The report continues: Democrats have outvoted Republicans by more than 25,000 ballots since early voting began on Feb. 20.
The report says that typically, Republicans surpass Democrats in the primaries by over 100,000 votes each year according to data from the last two gubernatorial election cycles.

In a Friday appearance on Fox New’s "Hannity," Rep. Matt Gaetz, R.-Fla., advocated for the removal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions should he decline to appoint a special counsel to investigate wrongdoing within the Department of Justice.
Gaetz told guest host Judge Jeanine Pirro that an Inspector General's report would be insufficient since such a report would not necessarily result in charges being brought by the Justice Department against those who have allegedly committed crimes, Breitbart reported.
"If Jeff Sessions does not appoint a second special counsel, then we need a new Attorney General, judge," he said. "Because you're right — even if we learn more horrifying things from the Inspector General, we can't actually prosecute somebody for those things because we would need somebody to be able to bring that case. And the Department of Justice and FBI obviously won't be bringing a case against themselves. So, Jeff Sessions needs to get rid of this mindset that is a dereliction of duty, and he needs to do what Congress has called for and appoint a second special counsel to get to the bottom of this."
