In a effort to protect natural and manmade resources, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has asked residents of the state to report sightings of an invasive rodent so that they might be captured. One solution offered to halt the proliferation of the destructive rodent is to eat them.
On Thursday, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that it is working to eradicate nutria from the state because, once established, the rodents could cause destruction to wetlands and damage to agricultural crops, levees, dikes and roadbeds.
The Verge reported that more than 20 nutria have been discovered in wetlands, rivers and canals in the counties of Merced, Fresno and Stanislaus. Some were pregnant females, and others were just babies — a clear sign that they're multiplying.
In the 1970s, the state of California managed to eradicate nutria, which are native to South America and can grow to be 2.5 feet in length and weigh 20 pounds. Concerns over their reemergence stem from the fact that they are prolific reproducers. Within a year of reaching reproductive maturity, a female nutria can give birth to more than 200 offspring.
Nutria are found in 18 U.S. states, including Louisiana. The website of Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries offers recipes featuring the meat of nutrias, including those for soups, salads and jambalaya. Nutria meat is considered to be healthier than turkey and reportedly tastes similar to wild rabbit. As a bonus, one nutria features four drumsticks.
According to Fox News, “Nutria were introduced to the U.S. in 1937 by an entrepreneur hoping to raise them for their fur. But some escaped from captivity and began to thrive in the Louisiana wetlands. By 1955, there were an estimated 20 million wild nutria in the state, devouring the grasses that kept coastal marshes from becoming free water. They were kept in check only by a flourishing trade in their pelts. But by the 1990s the fur market dried up, and the nutria multiplied.”

Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) is being shunned by his own party in his bid for reelection, over his conservative-leaning positions and pro-life policy. He doesn’t fit their mold.
Lipinski told the New York Times in an interview, “This is part of the reason Donald Trump won. Democrats have chased people out of the party.”
The Washington Free Beacon reported Monday: Lipinski is being targeted by liberals who are frustrated with his opposition to abortion and that he is one of three Democrats still in office who voted against the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Lipinski has frequently warned about a “tea party of the Left” forming as a mirror to the Republican Tea Party wave in 2010.
Fellow Illinois Democratic Reps. Luis Gutierrez and Jan Schacowsky have endorsed his primary challenger, businesswoman Marie Newman. He also does not enjoy the support of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, an unusual rebuke for a sitting congressman.
According to the New York Times: Mr. Lipinski's outnumbered supporters were the diminished lunch-pail Democrats that once dominated his Southside district. Those of his rival, Marie Newman, came from the party's ascendant coalition — young progressives and women like Elizabeth Layden, a Patagonia-clad teacher who explained her opposition to Mr. Lipinski in blunt terms.
"Because he's a dinosaur, 'cause he's a phony, 'cause he's a Republican who claims to be a Democrat," said Ms. Layden, 49, who has been making phone calls and knocking on doors to help unseat Mr. Lipinski, a seven-term House member, in the primary race this month. "Hello, women's rights, and hello, my reproductive rights. Get out of my uterus."

The Trump Organization has ordered tee markers for use on their golf courses that feature the presidential seal, despite a federal law that prohibits the seal from being used for any purpose outside of government business.
According to ProPublica, sign and metalworking company Eagle Sign confirmed that it had received an order to create dozens of tee markers depicting the presidential seal to be used on golf courses owned by the Trump Organization.
Sign and metalworking company Eagle Sign and Design told ProPublica that it had gotten an order to create dozens of tee markers featuring the presidential seal to be used on Trump golf courses.
One of the tee markers, which indicate to golfers where they should tee off, was featured in an Eagle Signs Facebook album titled “Trump International Golf Course.” The post has since been removed.
Eagle Signs declined to disclose the identity of the client that ordered the markers, but ProPublica viewed an order form that listed the customer as "Trump International."
"We made the design, and the client confirmed the design," said Eagle Sign owner Joseph E. Bates.
Several golf courses owned by the Trump Organization bear the name “Trump International,” including the West Palm Beach, Fla. course frequented by President Donald Trump when he is visiting his nearby Mar-a-Lago estate. Some golf courses owned by the Trump Organization have featured markers depicting the Trump family crest.
Federal law dictates that the presidential seal can only be used for government business. Other uses of the seal are illegal, and violations of the law are punishable by up to six months in prison.
Past presidents, including former President Barack Obama, have used golf balls which feature the presidential seal, ProPublica noted.
In this case, the difference is that a private company is using the seal, said Richard Painter, vice chairman of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a government accountability group. Painter also served as an associate White House counsel during the George W. Bush administration.
"If we had heard of a private company using it for commercial purposes, we would have sent them a nasty letter," he said.
While Trump is in office, The Trump Organization is being operated by his sons, Eric and Donald Trump Jr.

While hosting the Oscars awards Sunday night, Jimmy Kimmel mocked multiple members of the Trump administration, including Hope Hicks, the White House Communications Director who just announced her resignation last week.
Kimmel suggested in a cryptic statement that the last two years (referencing the Trump’s election campaign and first year in the White House) have been dark and depressing.
“If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that reality can be depressing. But tonight’s nominated documentaries show us that were there is darkness, there’s also hope. Except at the White House. Hope quit on Wednesday,” he retorted.

Police recently thwarted a planned heist of an armored truck, preventing a plot to kill the guards of the truck and steal $4 million in cash. The dramatic takedown of the suspects was captured on video.
Recorded during rush hour on Feb. 20 on Interstate 95 near Palm City, Fla., and released last week, the video shows officers in vehicles surrounding that of the suspects , who were identified as Daryl Canady, Alger Ellison and Martiavius Williams. The men allegedly intended to rob an armored truck at a PNC Bank in Port St. Lucie, Fox News reported.
Following the first heist, the suspects planned to perpetrate a second robbery of another armored bank car, according to investigators.
"To me, as I look back on the video, it almost looks like a TV production," Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said during a Friday press conference. "We had a heads up, quite a bit in advance, we were intimately involved in planning for the arrest.”
Canady was allegedly the mastermind of the plot and unknowingly worked with a tipster who was aligned with the FBI.
"In my decades of law enforcement I can't remember a single case where we had such good (intelligence)," Snyder said.
Several law enforcement agencies worked to prevent the violent plot that was two years in the making, including the Martin County Sheriff's Office, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and the FBI.
"It was our swat team, our special operators," Snyder said. "I will tell you this in today's day and age, with so much criticism of law enforcement, there were several dozen people with tactical rifles and their fingers on the trigger — and nobody pulled the trigger."
The suspects were arrested on Feb. 20 and remain in federal custody.

Despite public demands for action on gun control and immigration reform, Congress is not expected to take action on either issue immediately.
As student survivors of the school shooting on Valentine’s Day in Parkland, Fla., continue to lobby heavily for stricter gun control legislation, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R.-Ky., signaled that the Senate will not take up the reform of gun laws this week. Although President Donald Trump challenged lawmakers to pass a sweeping background checks bill, the Senate is expected this week to take up a bill addressing banking reform, The Hill reported.
The protection of beneficiaries of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, commonly known as “Dreamers,” has been temporarily extended by a federal court, relieving pressure on the issue from Congress. Lawmakers are not expected to act on immigration reform until after the 2018 midterm elections.
According to Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R.-Texas, there might not be sufficient “time” to tackle Trump’s trillion-and-a-half dollar infrastructure plan, and there is little appetite for renewing the effort to repeal Obamacare.
The inaction on hot-button issues concerning the electorate is likely to disappoint those on the left and right, particularly those Republicans who had hoped to leverage December’s big win on tax cuts to further the president’s agenda.
"Going into 2018, members' hopes were high that we would ride on the momentum of tax reform to repeal more of Obamacare or reign in entitlement spending," said a senior GOP aide. "After the Republican retreat [in West Virginia], that momentum was brought to a halt with talk of lowering expectations. Not only would neither of those big ticket items be done, but we would not even try to do reconciliation or a budget."
The inaction on major issues is attributable to GOP leaders who do not want to consider votes on issues that could prove destructive to vulnerable, centrist Republicans in November’s midterm elections. Conversely, conservative lawmakers are pushing for a more aggressive agenda prior to the elections, as they are fearful of the possibility of primary challenges from the right.
"Tensions are building as members express concern that they have tough elections ahead of them and these concerns are not being taken seriously," the GOP aide said. "Leadership is telling members to just keep talking about tax reform and it will all be fine. Members aren't buying it."
Many Republican lawmakers and aides are uncertain what will be accomplished legislatively prior to Election Day. Between now and Nov. 6, the House will be on recess for 14 weeks, including the customary recess for the entire month of August.
"My money is always on inaction with this Congress," said a former Democratic leadership aide regarding gun control reform. "I don't expect they're going to jump in to do anything."

Andrew Pollack, whose daughter, Meadow, was slain in the mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school on Feb. 14, was interviewed by CNN Tuesday morning, and vowed to not quit until he helps make schools safe across the country.
Pollack explained three parts of a pending Florida bill, with the first giving police the authority to confiscate a weapon if they believe someone is acting irrationally.
Mental illness is also addressed in the bill, with more counselors in schools, Pollack said.
“I’d like to talk to the kids, I understand their pain,” Pollack said, but stated he believes the students’ efforts are going in the wrong direction, as they are pushing now for more gun control.
“Let’s make the school safe,” Pollack said, adding that once the schools are safe, they can march for all the gun laws they want.
“We’re not going to stop. We need everyone to group together. It’s not about a political party,” he stated.
One Twitter user on the left responded to Pollack’s interview by trashing the new Florida legislation that will allow police to confiscate weapons from people acting irrationally, claiming that it will discriminate against “people of color without due process.”

During Sunday night’s 90th annual Academy Awards ceremony, Frances McDormand shared her Oscar win for Best Actress with all the female nominees in every category, requesting that they stand during her acceptance speech.
McDormand, 60, who won the Oscar for her role in the film “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” said while accepting her award, "I'd be so honored to have all the female nominees in every category stand with me in this room tonight."
Women throughout the audience stood as McDormand named some of their positions. "The filmmakers, the producers, the directors, the writers, the cinematographers, the composers, the songwriters, the designers — come on!" she said.
"Okay, look around everybody! Look around, ladies and gentlemen!" McDormand said. "Because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed."
"I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen: inclusion rider," said McDormand. Backstage, she elaborated on the “inclusion rider,” where “you can ask for, and/or demand, at least 50 percent diversity in not only the casting but also the crew.”
“We’re not going back,” she vowed.
Following McDormand’s remarks, Academy Awards host Jimmy Kimmel said, "I really hope Frances McDormand gets an Emmy for the speech she gave at the Oscars."
"I wish I was a woman," Kimmel quipped. "I really do."

During Sunday night’s 90th annual Academy Awards ceremony, Chilean actress Daniela Vega became the first openly transgender person to present at the Oscars.
“Thank you, thank you so much for this moment. I want to invite you to open your heart and your feelings to feel the reality and to feel love. Can you feel it?” Vega said.
Vega introduced Sufjan Stevens and St. Vincent, who performed "Mystery of Love" from the Oscar-nominated film "Call Me By Your Name.”
Vega stars in the film “A Fantastic Woman,” which tells the story of a transgender singer who encounters discrimination. On Sunday, “A Fantastic Woman” won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Vega said that “there is a weird feeling” toward the transgender people in the U.S. and Chile, The Hill reported.
"The political and social situation isn’t that much different in Chile than it is (in the U.S.), in that there is a weird feeling when it comes to transgender people in general,” Vega said.”We're fighting for liberty, to be heard. I see the world is trying to change fast, but in some areas, that change is being blocked.”

During Sunday’s 90th annual Academy Awards ceremony, retired professional basketball player Kobe Bryant said he was glad basketball players “do a little bit more than shut up and dribble.”
Bryant made the remark as he and animator Glen Keane accepted the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for their movie “Dear Basketball.”
“To Kobe, for writing ‘Dear Basketball,'” Keane said while accepting the award. “It’s a message for all of us, whatever form your dream may take, it’s through passion and perseverance that the impossible is possible.”
“I don’t know if it’s possible,” Bryant said. “I mean, as basketball players, we’re really supposed to shut up and dribble, but I’m glad we do a little bit more than that.”
According to The Hill, Bryant’s comments were reportedly a retort to remarks made in February by conservative commentator Laura Ingraham after NBA players LeBron James and Kevin Durant criticized President Donald Trump in an online video, which contended that the president doesn’t "give a f— about the people."
"Millions elected Trump to be their coach," Ingraham said. "So keep the political commentary to yourself, or, as someone once said, ‘shut up and dribble.'”
Durant called Ingraham’s comment “ignorant.”
“Ignorance is something I try to ignore. That was definitely an ignorant comment," he said. "I do play basketball, but I am a civilian and I am a citizen of the United States, so my voice is just as loud as hers, I think – or even louder.”
In response to Ingraham, James tweeted the hashtag, “we will not shut up and dribble.”

President Trump lambasted the Obama administration in a Twitter post Monday morning, regarding the federal surveillance abuse prior to the 2016 presidential election, and Russian meddling:
Why did the Obama Administration start an investigation into the Trump Campaign (with zero proof of wrongdoing) long before the Election in November? Wanted to discredit so Crooked H would win. Unprecedented. Bigger than Watergate! Plus, Obama did NOTHING about Russian meddling.

Shortly after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a 20-year-old Bangladeshi man aboard a Malindo Air flight had to be tied up after he reportedly stripped naked and started watching pornography on his laptop, and tried to attack female flight attendants.
Local media reported that he was arrested upon his arrival in Dhaka.
Yahoo News reported: The man, a student at a Malaysian university, initially put his clothes back on at the request of cabin crew, the New Straits Times newspaper reported.
But he then tried to hug female crew members, and when his advances were rejected he became aggressive and attacked a stewardess, the paper said.
The cabin crew and passengers reportedly managed to subdue him and his hands were tied up with a piece of cloth for the rest of the flight.
There was no indication as to why he was acting strangely.
The airline, a Malaysian subsidiary of an Indonesian company, declined to confirm all the details but said in a statement that a “disruptive passenger” was tied up on the flight to Dhaka, and was arrested on arrival.

Aldon Smith is a troubled man. The suspended NFL star who plays for the Oakland Raiders posted a cryptic picture to his Instagram account late Sunday as police were searching for him over an alleged domestic violence incident.
Someone called 911 to report a domestic violence incident at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Smith fled his San Francisco home before officers arrived, a spokesman from the city’s police department said.
Sgt. Michael Andraychak said the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening and investigators are asking for the public’s help in finding Smith.
The Mercury News, citing dispatch audio, reported that the alleged victim said Smith bit her wrists and may have fled in a black Range Rover. A San Francisco dispatcher reportedly said Smith drank two bottles of tequila.
A picture of pavement was posted later on Smith’s Instagram with the caption, "Wtfoh you all are wrong."
The talented linebacker has been arrested several times on charges including drunken driving, vandalism and illegal possession of assault rifles since the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft.

Russia will “never” extradite any of the 13 Russians indicted by the United States for alleged election-meddling, Russian President Vladimir Putin said, even as he insisted they didn't act on behalf of his government.
Putin’s comments in an NBC News interview illustrated the long odds that the Russian operatives will ever appear in U.S. court to answer charges of running a massive, secret social media trolling and targeted messaging operation to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
The United States has no extradition treaty with Moscow and can't compel it to hand over citizens, and a provision in Russia's constitution prohibits extraditing its citizens to foreign countries.
The detailed, 37-page indictment from special counsel Robert Mueller last month alleges Russian operatives working for the Internet Research Agency used fake social media accounts and on-the-ground political organizing to interfere the election.
In a wide ranging interview, Putin also bragged to NBC host Megyn Kelly about Russia’s nuclear abilities.

The Oscars launched into politics Sunday night, including several winners who made a pitch for a world without borders or walls.
Guillermo del Toro: “I am an immigrant…The greatest thing our art does and our industry does is to erase the lines in the sand. We should continue doing that when the world tells us to make them deeper.”
Eugenio Derbez introduces song from “Coco” that “pulls a 12-year-old Mexican boy from the land of the living across the border to the land of the dead…in the afterworld there are no walls.”
Lupita Nyong’o from Kenya and Kumail Nanjiani from Pakistan launched into a message to “dreamers” and immigrants: “Dreams are the foundation of Hollywood and dreams are the foundation of America. To all the dreamers out there, we stand with you.”

President Trump will meet Monday in Washington DC with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with hopes of soon reaching a long-sought Mideast peace agreement.
Trump and Netanyahu, who have met several times before, are expected to discuss a range of issues beyond Israeli-Palestinian peace, with Iran, Syria and now North Korea topping their list.
Trump is attempting to act on international issues and negotiate with world leaders amid ongoing federal probes into whether anybody on his 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia to win the White House race, while Netanyahu is facing allegations of corruption that have resulted in calls for his resignation.
The president has worked hard to rekindle the relationship between the U.S. and Israel after former President Obama drove a wedge between the two allies. Trump announced last year that the U.S. would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital by moving the U.S. Embassy to the city.
