LAGOS: Fishing boats look like specks alongside Egina, which has been moored for the past month in Lagos. Even the container ships that normally dominate the port look like small boats.
The floating production storage and offloading facility (FPSO), developed by the French group Total, looks a lot like a giant Lego set.
Everything about it is huge: Its weight (220,000 tons), length (330 meters/1,083 feet) and width (60 meters). At 33 meters, it's as high as a 10-story building.

BASRA: Yaser Kasim adjusts his feet, grins broadly and stares down the camera lens.
It is midnight in Basra and he has just stopped for a selfie. Again. On the short walk from the Mnawi Hotel's dining room to the lobby, he is met every few steps by a fan seeking a photographic memento.
"We'd better do the interview upstairs," he smiles. "Otherwise it could take a while."

BERLIN: Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) have bought Chancellor Angela Merkel time with their vote to join her conservatives in another coalition, but she risks losing her long grip on power if she fails to balance the awkward allies' conflicting demands.
Merkel's conservatives — her Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) allies — and the SPD are both still bruised after suffering from the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in last year's election.

The offensive is one of the deadliest in the war and one local insurgent group called it a "scorched earth" campaign.
The government is pressing on despite Western calls for it to abide by a 30-day, countrywide cease-fire demanded by the UN Security Council.
