NEW YORK: A global sell-off in stocks came back around to the US in morning trading Friday after President Donald Trump doubled down on "trade war" talk.
Trump took to Twitter to defend his promise from Thursday to impose stiff tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum, saying the US is losing on trade with virtually every country and that "trade wars are good" and "easy to win."

BERLIN: European countries should look at the broader economic benefits of increased Gulf travel rather than focusing on the fate of national airlines, a senior UAE official said ahead of open skies negotiations with the European Union.
Some national carriers like Germany's Lufthansa are concerned about losing business to Gulf rivals under a deal, which would govern traffic rights, as well as issues such as safety, security, and environmental cooperation.

WASHINGTON DC: US President Donald Trump yesterday welcomed the prospect of a trade war with other countries, remaining defiant in the face of the global uproar sparked by his sudden announcement of steel and aluminum tariffs.
With global stock markets tumbling and allies indignant, the president responded to the negative reaction by raising the stakes and vowing even more sweeping trade steps.
In a blistering series of morning tweets, he said he would impose "reciprocal taxes" on all imports from trading partners that have duties on American exports.

DUBAI: Malek Jaziri's remarkable run to the Dubai Tennis Championships semifinals was brought to an end by Roberto Bautista Agut on Friday.
The Tunisian was beaten 6-3, 6-4 by third-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut.
Jaziri became the first Arab to make it to the last four at The Aviation Club since 2002. But having seen off the challenge of world No.4 Grigor Dimitrov earlier in the week he had no answer to the powerful Spaniard who made the pair's difference in world rankings — Bautista Agut is ranked No.22 to Jaziri's 117 — all too apparent.

MOSCOW: Russian gas giant Gazprom said on Friday it had asked a court to terminate its gas supply and transit contracts with Ukraine after being ordered to pay $2.56 billion to Kiev, in a dispute which the EU said could threaten gas flows to Europe.
The move follows a ruling in a Stockholm arbitration court, which ordered Gazprom this week to pay Ukraine's energy firm Naftogaz in a long-running dispute over fees.

UNITED NATIONS: UN investigators are blaming the Allied Democratic Forces rebel group for carrying out the deadliest single assault on the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo in almost 25 years as well as two other attacks.
The main focus of their investigation was the Dec. 7 rebel attack at a base in Semuliki near Beni that killed 15 Tanzanian peacekeepers, wounded 43 others, and left one peacekeeper missing. Two earlier attacks on Tanzanian peacekeepers in nearby Mamundiona on Sept. 16 and Oct. 7 were also investigated.

LONDON: At the end of January, Tottenham entered a tough run of fixtures. This, it was widely agreed, was make or break. That spell, in which they faced Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus in among their FA Cup fixtures, would define their season. That series of games comes to an end as they face Juventus in the Champions League at Wembley on Wednesday. Where, then, is their season going?

DUBAI: The new coach of Kuwait has warned "it is going to take years" for the team to recover from the two-year ban imposed by FIFA.
Football's governing body suspended Kuwait in October 2015, citing governmental interference in the running of the sport in the country. The national team had to withdraw from qualification for this summer's World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup, with its clubs not allowed to participate in the AFC Cup. The national team dropped from 139 to 189 in the FIFA rankings.

Talking to Arab News, he said that PTI's political opponents were trying to create an issue out of nothing and they would not get anything out of their antics but shame.
"It is not easy to be in the opposition in Pakistan," he said. "Khan is struggling for a just cause and he will prevail."

LAHORE: Pakistan's loyal army of football supporters is hoping the country's football federation will have its membership restored by the world governing body FIFA.
After taking full control of its finances, the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) will write to FIFA next week seeking restoration of its suspended membership.
If the federation is successful, regional and international matches will return to the country.
FIFA suspended the PFF in October 2017, because of "undue third-party interference" in the federation's affairs.
