Syrian Army launches massive attack on IS targets south of Damascus (video)

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 11:57 PM PDT

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:45 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has reportedly gained further ground against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) in the al-Hajar al-Aswad district, to the south of Damascus, using heavy artillery as fighting continued in the area on Sunday.

Footage shows soldiers as they prepared and fired rocket launchers, reportedly hitting targets and seizing multiple buildings in the process.

The offensive comes after the Syrian military announced the full recapture of Eastern Ghouta from militants late last month.

Aleppo’s Armenians burn Turkish products on 103rd anniversary of genocide (video)

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 11:27 PM PDT

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:10 A.M.) – Members of the Armenian communities in Aleppo gathered on Sunday in a rally marking the 103rd anniversary of the Armenian genocide and condemning more recent Turkish military actions in the region.

Participants carried banners and called for the active boycott of Turkish products as they set a pile of Turkish goods on fire.

“These activities and pleas are a union of voices raised to the international community, until Turkey is condemned and asked to stop the crimes against the people of the world,” a participant said.

The genocide took place in the Ottoman Empire during and after World War I, between 1915 and 1923. Commemorations have taken place on April 24 since the 1920s, marking the date in 1915 when hundreds of Armenian intellectuals were arrested in the Ottoman capital of Constantinople, before being executed.

In the years that followed ethnic Armenians were displaced, deported or placed in concentration camps by Ottoman authorities. Between 600,000 and 1.8 million people are believed to have died during the period.

OPCW inspectors visit site of alleged chemical attack in Douma

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 10:35 PM PDT

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (8:35 A.M.) – Experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) finally made it into the former rebel bastion of Douma to investigate a suspected chemical attack.

The chemical weapons experts collected samples where an alleged chemical attack by the Syrian forces killed and injured scores of civilians in the besieged city.

“The OPCW will evaluate the situation and consider future steps including another possible visit to Douma,” the organization said.

Jaysh al-Islam rebel group accused the Syrian Army of using chemical substances in April 7 when the government troops launched its final onslaught to reclaim the East Ghouta city.

The US, UK and France launched joint strikes against targets in Syria in response to the alleged chemical attack.

However, the Syrian government, and its main backer; Russia, categorically denied using any chemical agents, saying they don’t even need to.

Meanwhile, several makeshift workshops that produce chemical agents were found across the rebel-held towns in East Ghouta after militants were evacuated.

With Summer approaching, Syrian Army prepares for two big offensives

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 06:25 PM PDT

BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:30 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has spent much of this Spring on the offensive in and around Damascus, leaving much of the rebel-held territory in northern Syria relatively untouched.

However, with the success of their East Ghouta and eastern Qalamoun offensives, the Syrian Arab Army can now turn their attention to two important fronts that are located away from Damascus.

Southern Syria

The first area of concentration for the Syrian Army will be the southern provinces of Dara’a and Al-Quneitra, which are both located near the borders of Jordan and the occupied Golan Heights.

Leading this offensive will be the Syrian Arab Army’s elite 4th Division, who have already deployed to the northern parts of the Dara’a Governorate.

The Russian Reconciliation Center has attempted to negotiate a peace deal with the rebel forces in these provinces; however, they ultimately rejected the deal and vowed to fight the government.

The Jordanian regime stepped in two weeks ago to ask the Russian Reconciliation Center to hold off launching the offensive, as they will try to convince the rebels to reconsider.

It has now been 14 days and the Syrian Army is set to launch their operations in the coming weeks.

Northwestern Syria

While this front may not be as large as southern Syria, the battle for Jabal Al-Akrad, the Al-Ghaab Plain and Jisr Al-Shughour will arguably be just as important to the Syrian Army.

Jisr Al-Shughour and Jabal Al-Akrad have long been strongholds for the terrorist groups of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and the Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP), making their capture a high priority for the Syrian military.

The aforementioned terrorist groups often fire indiscriminate missiles into the nearby Latakia Governorate, which not only agitates the Syrian government, but also, the Russian military because of their bases in the province.

Turkey has already given the Russian military their approval to launch this offensive, but it may take some time for this operation to get going due to the fact that the Tiger Forces are still busy fighting ISIS in southern Damascus.

As shown in the ANNA News video below, the Syrian general was escorted by an elite pair of Russian military bodyguards that were to ensure his safety as he traveled through Dumayr.

The Tiger Forces commander was responsible for leading the offensive in the eastern Qalamoun before the militants finally agreed to surrender this imperative region near the Syrian capital.

Syria needs both military and political de-escalation – UN Syria envoy

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 04:19 PM PDT

UN Special Envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura considers it necessary to agree not only on a military de-escalation, but also on a political de-escalation in Syria.

On Friday, he discussed the issues of Syrian settlement with Russia's Defense Minister and Foreign Minister, Sergey Shoigu and Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow.

“On the political tensions, we need a political de-escalation, not only a military de-escalation,” de Mistura was quoted as saying by the press service.

Special envoy expects “both Astana and Sochi to actually make a contribution to the Geneva process,” he said, adding that “at the end, that is the only internationally recognized process.”

“So we need to revitalize all three (processes): Make Astana (process) more consistent in de-escalation, make Sochi with its promise to become a reality and Geneva to use it,” de Mistira explained.

The eighth round of the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva held from November 28 to December 14, 2017, was attended by delegated of the country's government and opposition. De Mistura described it as the “golden opportunity missed.”

The first round of the Astana talks on Syria took place on January 23-24, 2017, which launched the process of determining moderate armed opposition groups, capable of holding talks with the Syrian government. Russia, Iran and Turkey also agreed to establish a trilateral group to monitor the Syrian ceasefire.

Battle map update of Syrian Army’s southern Damascus offensive

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 02:44 PM PDT

BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:40 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched their long-awaited southern Damascus offensive early last weekend after the Islamic State (ISIS) refused to leave the area.

In response to the Islamic State’s refusal, the Syrian military and their Palestinian allies unleashed a powerful overnight assault that forced the Islamic State command in the Yarmouk Camp to agree to surrender their positions.

However, shortly after the agreement was made, a large group of Islamic State terrorist refused to adhere to the terms of deal, vowing to fight the Syrian Arab Army and their allies.

The Syrian Army and their Palestinian allies would then storm southern Damascus from three different axis in a bid to overwhelm the terrorist group.

Since launching this attack, the Syrian Army and their Palestinian allies have managed to capture several sites, including the Al-Zayn Neighborhood of the Yarmouk Camp District.

The Syrian Army and their Palestinian allies are now working to break into central Yarmouk, as the Islamic State forces in the area continue to retreat.

UAE passenger plane intercepted by Qatari fighter jet

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 02:34 PM PDT

The aircraft carrying dozens of people on board had to manoeuvre in order to prevent a collision with Qatari fighter planes, UAE state news agency WAM reported.

The United Arab Emirates has stated that Qatar’s fighter jets had intercepted a civilian plane heading for Bahrain with 86 passengers aboard, according to the media.

The WAM added that the UAE civilian aircraft had to manoeuvre to avoid a collision.

This is not the first case, as similar incidents have occurred earlier. In March, the UAE aviation authority reported about two Qatari jets coming dangerously close to two civilian aircraft from the Emirates. In January, according to the United Arab Emirates, Qatari jets had twice intercepted Emirati civilian aircraft; however, Doha refuted the allegations.

These cases prompted the United Arab Emirates to lodge an official complaint against Qatar with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) over the country’s jets intercepting Emirati civilian aircrafts.

The relations between Qatar and several other regional states deteriorated significantly in June 2017, when Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and a number of other countries severed diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing it of sponsorship of terrorism and undermining regional stability.

Rebels reject reconciliation terms in northern Homs, Syrian Army prepares for battle

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 02:21 PM PDT

BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:10 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) dropped thousands of leaflets over the northern countryside of Homs and southeastern part of Hama, Sunday, calling on civilians to stay away from militant bases and to leave these areas by reaching an army checkpoint.

According to a military source in the Homs Governorate, the Islamist rebels in the Al-Rastan pocket rejected the reconciliation terms offered by the Syrian Army and Russian military this weekend.

In response to the rebel rejection of terms, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has prepared their forces to launch another big offensive in the area.

Similar to their offensive ten days ago, the Syrian Army will target the southeastern countryside of the Hama Governorate in a bid to seal off this part of the province near the Orontes River.

The Syrian Army wants the Hama-Homs Highway reopened, but it is currently blocked by the militants inside the Al-Rastan pocket.

No sleep for ISIS tonight as Syrian military hammers southern Damascus with new weapon (video)

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 01:50 PM PDT

BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:30 P.M.) – It is going to be another long night for the Islamic State (ISIS) in southern Damascus, as the Syrian and Russian forces continue to pound their positions around Yarmouk Camp, Al-Qadam, Al-Tadamon, and Hajar Al-Aswad.

According to local sources, the Syrian military began using their Goulan-1000 missiles against the Islamic State forces in southern Damascus tonight.

These Syrian-manufactured missiles have been the source of the powerful explosions and deafening sounds that are coming from the southern Damascus districts – video below:

While the Syrian military hits ISIS from the ground, the Russian Aerospace Forces have been hammering their positions from the air.

The Russian Aerospace Forces have already launched a half dozen airstrikes over Hajar Al-Aswad, Yarmouk Camp, and Al-Qadam in the last hour.

With these air and missile strikes, the Islamic State will not likely be able to withstand these kind of attacks in the coming days, as their defenses are quickly crumbling in southern Damascus.

Erdogan accuses US of arming Kurdish forces in Syria for free

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 01:33 PM PDT

The Turkish president claimed that roughly 5,000 trucks, all loaded with weaponry, were dispatched to northern Syria.

Speaking to the Turkish NTV news channel on Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed that the US and its allies are refusing to sell weapons to Ankara while choosing to provide them to Kurdish forces and most notably, for free.

“We cannot buy weapons from the US with our money, but unfortunately, the US and coalition forces give these weapons, this ammunition, to terrorist organizations for free," he said. He reiterated that the threat predominantly originates from what he called "strategic partners.”

Erdogan went on to say that Washington goes continues to arm militants in Syria, sending in convoys full of weapons there. For instance, according to him, the US sent 5,000 trucks loaded with weapons to northern parts of the embattled country.

The US looks upon the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) as an ally in Syria, and to be more precise, a constituent part of the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SDF has allegedly been trained, equipped and monitored by the Americans.

Last December, US President Donald Trump approved providing $393 million worth of weapons to what Washington calls partners in Syria – the YPG being one of them. Shortly thereafter, the US announced its intention to set up an all-Kurdish battalion comprising about 30,000 people, which was supposed to be deployed along the Turkish border.

The move was met with the utmost fury by the Turkish side, and on January 20, Ankara launched a military operation codenamed Olive Branch, tasked with ousting SDF troops from areas in northern Syria near the Turkish border. Ankara recognizes the group to be affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is considered a terror organization by the US, the EU and Turkey.

The latter accused on multiple occasions the SDF of maintaining child soldiers among its ranks and purposefully setting up positions and checkpoints in densely populated districts so that it could allegedly use civilians as human shields.

Syrian Army strips militants of suicide belts, vast cache of NATO arms (video)

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 11:40 AM PDT

An estimated 6,000 Jaysh al-Islam militants and their families are expected to withdraw from East Qalamoun, northwest of Syrian capital, to Jarablus in northern Aleppo province.

Syrian troops carrying out searches of militants at the settlement of Ar-Ruheiba in the Eastern Qalamoun Mountains in Rif Dimashq Governate have seized suicide belts and ammunition which jihadists tried to take with them during their withdrawal, the Syran Arab News Agency reports.

According to the Syrian Army, the militants’ withdrawal, agreed based on the same terms allowing fighters to withdraw from Eastern Ghouta, will continue for the next two or three days.

Last week militants concluded their withdrawal from the city of Dumayr, the makeshift capital and key supply center for militant positions in Eastern Qalamoun.

SANA has published photos of the weaponry surrendered by militants in the region. The weapons includes NATO anti-tank missiles, communications equipment, rocket propelled grenades, heavy machine guns, shoulder-fired MANPADS, truck-mounted heavy cannons, jeeps, trucks and even tanks.

The Syrian government significantly strengthened its control over the country following the liberation of the major population center of Eastern Ghouta northeast of Damascus earlier this month. In addition to a Daesh (ISIS)* which has been reduced to a few pockets of resistance in eastern Syria, militant opposition is concentrated in the Daara and Quneitra governates in the country’s southwest and near the Israeli and Jordanian borders, a pocket northeast of the city of Homs, and territories in the Idlib and Aleppo governates near the Turkish border. Northeastern Syria is controlled by the Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces and their US allies.

Syrian Army, Palestinian forces advance in Yarmouk Camp after fierce clashes with ISIS

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 11:33 AM PDT

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:20 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their Palestinian allies were able to score a new advance against the so-called “Islamic State” (ISIS), today, seizing several buildings in the process.

Led by their 105th Brigade of the Republican Guard, the Syrian Arab Army and their Palestinian allies stormed several axes around the Yarmouk Camp, Hajar Al-Aswad, Al-Tadamon, and Al-Qadam in a bid to force ISIS to retreat further south in Damascus.

According to a military source in Damascus, among the advances made by the Syrian Army and their Palestinian allies, the biggest push was made at the Yarmouk Camp, where they liberated Al-Zayn Street from the Islamic State terrorists.

While the Syrian Army advances on the ground, the Russian Aerospace Forces have been heavily bombarding southern Damascus, hitting several Islamic State targets in Yarmouk Camp, Al-Qadam, and Hajar Al-Aswad.

The Islamic State will not likely hold onto these areas for much longer, as the Syrian military and their allies continue to heavily bombard these southern Damascus districts 24/7.

Palestinian teen Abdul-Khaliq Burnat sentenced to 19 months in Israeli military prison for stone throwing

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 11:19 AM PDT

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (8:30)- The son of a well known Palestinian activist in the West Bank has just been sentenced to 19 months in an Israeli military prison, he was charged with throwing stones and damaging Israel’s illegal separation wall.

Abdul-Khaliq Burnat with his youngest brother, Mohyaldeen Burnat, in the West Bank village of Bil’in.

Abdul-Khaliq Burnat was sentenced to serve 19 months in Ofer military prison today, having served in administrative detention (held without a charge) for 133 days already.

The military court, several times delayed the court hearings for the teen, insuring that he was held and interrogated consistently between the 10th of December (2017) – date of his arrest – up until today.

Abdul-Khaliq’s family are forced to pay 18,000 NIS (approx. 5,100 USD). He has also been handed a 3 year probation period, to start after his sentence is served. The court stated that he will serve 6 months in prison again if he is involved in any activity that the occupation forces disapprove of.

On the 10th of December, last year, Abdul-Khaliq and two of his friends were travelling between their home village of Bil’in and a neighbouring village, on the way to get pizza for dinner. Instead of returning back to the village with the food, the three boys were ambushed violently by Israeli gunmen. The Israeli troops stopped the car they were travelling in, held the teens at gun point and began to brutally beat them, this was done as they pulled them out of the vehicle, blindfolded the boys and zip tied their hands. The boys were thrown into the back of an Israeli vehicle and transported to Ofer Military Prison, where a torturous interrogation process began.

Abdul-Khaliq was 17 at the time of his arrest, turning 18 in solitary confinement.

This is not the first time Abdul-Khaliq has been arrested and brutalised by Israeli forces, he was shot in the back of the head in late January of 2017, they then brutally arrested him at early hours of the morning in March, whilst he was still recovering from his head injury. Prior to this, Israeli forces had shot both him and his younger brother Mohammed with Rubber coated steel bullets. Abdul-Khaliq’s older brother, Majd Burnat, was also shot through the upper leg with live ammunition, in 2014, almost bleeding to death from his wound.

As it stands, Abdul-Khaliq’s father, Iyad Burnat, will not be permitted to visit his son for the duration of his imprisonment.

Israeli Military courts currently maintain a conviction rate of roughly 99.74%, these courts are only for Palestinians.

Israeli Jews notably are tried in a completely different legal system, when they commit a crime in the West Bank. Israel is also the only state on earth which has legalised the usage of torture against prisoners.

Abdul Khaliq Burnat will join over 6,500 Palestinian political prisoners, held for similar crimes and treated like terrorists for things that barely merit a fine in most countries around the world.

France’s Macron urges US, allies to stay in Syria even after Daesh defeat

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 11:14 AM PDT

On April 14, the United Kingdom, the United States and France launched strikes at Syria over alleged reports of a chemical attack in the city of Douma, with the three countries firing over 100 missiles at the country.

French President Emmanuel Macron in an interview with Fox News said that the US, France and allies must remain in Syria after defeating the Daesh* terror group to build “new Syria”.

Macron previously stated that it was he who persuaded US President Donald Trump not to leave Syria. Trump before said that the US can leave Syria “very soon”, and “others will take care of” the situation.

“Even after the end of the war against Daesh, the US, France and our allies, all countries in the region, even Russia and Turkey, will play an important role in creating a new Syria. But to determine the future, of course, will be the Syrian people,” he added.

According to Macron, leaving Syria will also allow Iran to consolidate there.

“We will have to build a new Syria after war and that is why I think the US role is very important… The day we will finish this war against the Daesh, if we leave definitely and totally even from the political point of view,” Macron said.

Emmanuel Macron believes that if France and allies leave Syria, they will leave the floor to the Iran, Bashar Assad and others, who will prepare the new war and fuel the new terrorists.

Earlier, French right-wing National Front party leader Marine Le Pen said that French involvement in the Western military strikes on Syria deprived Paris of an opportunity to play the role of an independent actor at the international arena.

France, along with the United States and the United Kingdom, launched strikes on a number of targets in Syria in response to the alleged chemical attack in the Damascus’ suburb of Douma.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, a total of 103 cruise missiles were launched by the United States and its allies, 71 of which were intercepted by Syria’s air defense systems. Russia called on the OPCW to launch an investigation into the reported chemical attack.

Syria’s President Bashar Al-Assad has slammed the attack as an act of “aggression,” while Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the airstrikes “violated the norms of international law, including the UN Charter and caused major damage to the process of peacefully settling the Syrian crisis.

VIDEO: East Qalamoun militants hand over huge quantities of weapons

Posted: 22 Apr 2018 08:25 AM PDT

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (6:25 P.M.) – Rebel factions of the East Qalamoun region continue to hand over their weapons and ammunition to the Syrian government after accepting an evacuation agreement.

Unbelievably huge quantities of ATGM launchers and missiles were seized by the Syrian Army before the rebel fighters leave to the country’s north.

The handed over arsenal include the US-made TWO, French-made Milan and the Chinese-made HJ-8; all are anti-tank, tube-launched missiles.

A military source said that more arms are to be handed over in conjunction with militant evacuation.

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (3:30 P.M.) – Huge explosions ripped through the Syrian capital as precise airstrikes hit the last ISIS pocket in southern Damascus.

The last insurgent-controlled enclave outside Damascus has come under heavy artillery and rocket shelling, as well as effective aerial bombardments conducted by Russian fighter jets.

Two depots containing weapons and ammunition were completely destroyed in the bombing.

Meanwhile, the government troops managed to eliminate several ISIS jihadists while attempting to infiltrate the Army positions through a tunnel in Hajar Aswad neighborhood.

A military source said that the Army seeks to fully besiege Hajar Aswad and eventually isolate it from the other jihadi-held Yarmouk Refugee Camp to cut off all supply routes and prevent the militants from moving through.

The government troops launched a full-scale offensive to reclaim the southern districts which are still under ISIS control. With these districts and neighborhoods liberated, the entire Syrian capital will be militants-free.
