LONDON: The inaugural non-stop Qantas flight between Perth and London last month may have been hailed as the future of aviation by the airline industry, but it's unlikely to have prompted much celebrating in Abu Dhabi.
The prospect of ultra-long haul flights, which reduce journey times by cutting out the need for stopovers, strikes at the heart of the business model of the likes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which have risen to prominence in recent years as major transit centers for global air travel.

KABUL: A severe dry winter has affected 22 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces, threatening the lives of 1 million Afghans, in addition to another 2 million who may feel its impact in the coming months as a hot summer approaches, UNICEF warned on Monday.

JEDDAH: The political leader of Yemen's Houthi rebels, Saleh Al-Sammad, was killed last week in an air strike by the Saudi-led coalition, the Iran-allied rebels said on Monday.
Al-Sammad, head of the Houthi's supreme political council, was "martyred" in the eastern province of Hodeidah on Thursday, the rebels said in a statement published on the Houthi-run Saba news agency.
He was No. 2 on the Saudi-led coalition's most-wanted list, after leader Abdel Malek Al-Houthi.
