Italy’s new online casino record, sports betting nearly doubles

According to figures compiled by Italian gaming industry news outlet Agimeg, online sports betting revenue topped €51.3m in March, a year-on-year gain of 82.4%, despite online betting turnover rising a comparatively tiny 12.4% to €546.2m. Retail betting revenue totaled €59.8m on turnover of €385.4m.

As ever, UK-listed operator Bet365 captured the lion's share of both revenue (16.3%) and turnover (29.1%), with SKS365's Planetwin365 in second place, GVC Holdings' Eurobet brand coming third, with Snaitech and Sisal rounding out the top-five.

The online casino vertical had a banner month, with overall revenue rising 27% year-on-year to €60.6m, a new market record, exceeding the €59.7m recorded in January 2018. Topping the online casino earnings was The Stars Group's flagship PokerStars brand, which scored a 9.3% share, relegating local lads Lottomatica to second with 8.8%, while the rest of the top-five played out as follows: Sisal (8.3%), Eurobet (6.2%) and 888 Holdings (5.5%).

On the poker front, tournament fees gained 7.4% to €8m, while cash games spending inched up 1.5% to €6.3m. PokerStars claimed 62.4% of the tournament market, while its cash games share rose to 40.3% after dipping below 40% for the first time in February.

As for the market's other verticals, virtual sports operators generated revenue of €22.8m in March, with €21.1m of that sum coming from machines in retail outlets. Goldbet led all virtual comers with a 27.8% share, followed by Snaitech (18.2%) and Eurobet (14%).

Online bingo revenue totaled €2.8m, with Tombola International claiming a 44.5% share, handily outpacing GVC's Bwin brand (12%), Sisal (10%) and Lottomatica (9.5%).

NEW ADVERTISING CURBS COMING?
Meanwhile, the global push to limit gambling advertising during televised sports events hasn't spared Italy. This month, Italian Senator Franco Mirabelli told GiocoNews that he planned to submit a revised version of his bill to reorganize the gaming sector, which would include a proposal to "forbid the publicity of the game within sports broadcasts."

Mirabelli claimed that "there is an excess in the use of sports networks to promote online gambling and gaming. It is therefore necessary to intervene" if the government is sincere about reducing the potential negative impacts of gambling.

Mirabelli is something of an online gambling killjoy, having previously argued against Italy following through on its commitment to share online poker liquidity with the regulated markets in France, Portugal and Spain, based on his belief that it will expose players to greater (but unspecified) risks and facilitate money laundering.

Genting BHD itching to get a hold of Japan casino license

Malaysia-listed conglomerate Genting BHD is building its financial war chest in anticipation of a bidding war for Japan's casino licenses.

Genting BHD itching to get a hold of Japan casino licenseIn its 2017 annual report, Genting BHD expressed optimism that the long-awaited Japan Integrated Resorts (IR) Implementation Bill will be approved in this year's Diet session. This reason alone has prompted Genting to "diligently" prepare for the much-coveted gaming licenses in Japan, according to the company.

"Many global gaming operators have pronounced their very keen interest to bid, and Genting Singapore will be facing fierce competition for the limited number of licenses," Genting said in a filing before the Bursa Malaysia on Monday.

Genting's annual report showed that its Genting Singapore subsidiary raised a total principal amount of JPY20 billion (US$177 million) in October 2017 via publicly-offered Samurai bonds.

International credit debt watchers Moody's Investors Service and Fitch Ratings Inc. had earlier rated Genting Singapore's Samurai Bonds at A3/A-.

Aside from dangling coupons with a five-year tenor, Genting Singapore earlier said that it also issued bonds on a three-year fixed tranche at yen offer-side swaps, plus 45 basis points to 55 basis points; and plus 75 basis points to 85 basis points on the seventh year.

"The funds are earmarked to support its corporate activities in Japan including preparatory works in anticipation of the passage of the Japan Integrated Resort Execution [Implementation] Bill and bidding for gaming licenses in Japan," Genting Bhd said.

Meanwhile, Genting also shared its plans for its other businesses across the globe.

In the UK, Genting said that it will come up with a strategy to boost its casino market share. Genting believes that growing its market share will help strengthen its position in the non-premium player segment.

The company will also continue to implement its strategy of reducing short-term volatility in the premium player segment.

In the U.S., Genting said that it remains focused on the implementation of the $400 million expansion of Resorts World Casino New York City. The expansion comes at a time when the Resorts World Casino has maintained its position as a market leader, according to Genting.

In Malaysia, Genting said that it’s committed on implementing its Genting Integrated Tourism Plan (GITP), which includes the opening of Skytropolis indoor theme park and the Twentieth Century Fox World Theme Park.

The allure of glitzy pachinko parlors dotting the streets of Japan continues to fade as the country prepares for the arrival of integrated resorts.

Data from the Tokyo-based Yano Research Institute showed that at the moment, only 10,258 pachinko halls remained in operation. This meant that one in 25 pachinko halls closed shop since 2015, according to Yano Research analysts.

In 2017, at least 177 pachinko operators went out of business, the study showed.

Back in 1995, pachinko parlors were able to lure some 30 million customers and gained an estimated ¥30 trillion (US$280 billion) in revenue. In 2016, the numbers slid to 10 million players at approximately 10,000 parlors, which reportedly raked in ¥22 trillion revenue.

Yano researchers pointed out that the decline of pachinko's popularity has something to do with the expanding entertainment options available to Japanese players.

With a single click, players may be able to access any forms of entertainment using their mobile phones. The researchers noted that technology has been a game changer, especially in rural areas where massive pachinko halls once served as the only outlet for entertainment.

The researchers also factored in demographics to the dwindling popularity of pachinko.

Operators’ efforts to entice younger generations to play pachinko by incorporating anime into the game have failed. Many millennials see pachinko as a game for middle-aged and older men.

In a survey conducted by Shirabee, 62.5 percent of the respondents in their 20s and 63.1 percent of those who are in their 30s said they felt like wasting money every time they play pachinko or other games of chance.

Their opinion was in contrast with what 48.8 percent of respondents in their 40s, 54.3 percent of those in their 50s, and just 46.5 percent of those 60 and above think about pachinko.

Lastly, tighter regulations on the industry continue to weigh on pachinko operator's shoulders.

In the fourth quarter of 2017, International brokerage Union Gaming warned that pachinko operators will have to brace themselves for an even tighter regulation as the integrated resorts become a reality.

The island of Cebu is quickly becoming the next destination—after Manila—for online gambling operators in the Philippines.

Data provided by property consultancy firm Colliers International Philippines shows that there are at least two internationally licensed gambling operators in Cebu.

One of the firms occupies a 22,000-square meter space at the Tower 1 Plaza Magellan in Mactan Newtown in Lapu-Lapu City, while the other opened nearly 3,700 square meters of office space at Momentum Building in the Cebu Business Park in Cebu City.

While Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)-Voice companies continue to dominate the office landscape, Colliers said that the online gambling business is emerging as a critical landscape in the Philippine island.

In fact, Colliers' Research Manager Joey Bondoc noted that online gambling operators are scouting for office spaces in Cebu's Mactan Island and Mandaue City, where office vacancies are recorded.

"With a more conducive local regulatory environment, we expect offshore gambling to become a major contributor to office take up in Cebu," Colliers said, according to the news outlet.

The property analyst also noted that most Chinese gambling operators tend to purchase residential properties to house their foreign employees.

Philippine property developers are now looking at online gambling firms to play messiah and save the cooling office space sector amid dwindling BPO investments.

Last year, Colliers predicted that the online gambling sector would be the silver lining in the Philippine office space, especially after the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) issued the remaining eight of the 53 Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) licenses.

PAGCOR chair Andrea Domingo estimated that the country's gross gaming revenue will rise to PHP186 billion (US$3.57 billion) with the bulk of growth coming from POGO licensees.

Domingo said PAGCOR plans to double its revenue target for POGO license holders to PHP6 billion ($115.2 million) this year from PHP3 billion ($56 million) in 2017.

"Colliers sees the current administration's infrastructure implementation and decentralization thrust benefiting Cebu as it is the largest business destination outside Metro Manila. This should entice more offshore gambling, BPO, KPO and traditional firms to set up shop or expand operations," according to the Colliers report.

Tsachi Maimon: There’s more stability and potential in regulated market

Investing in a regulated gambling market has its pros and cons.

With checks and balances in place, operators will have peace of mind doing business and putting their money in a regulated market. A combination of responsible gambling measures, sensible and effective licensing requirements, and a workable taxation regime based on gross gaming revenue are said to bring the best possible outcome not only for consumers, but also for operators as well.

On the downside, margins of profit are lower in a regulated market compared with the gray ones.

But if you ask Aspire Global CEO Tsachi Maimon which he will choose between the two markets, Maimon said he's definitely willing to bet on a regulated market than gamble the future of his business in the gray market.

"In regulated market, it's true that the margins of profit are getting lower but the stability and potential for Aspire Global, because of the type of solution that we have, is growing over there. We see it as an opportunity," Maimon told CalvinAyre.com. "So, in regulated environment, media companies that are not able to operate in a non-regulated environment, we are doing it for them. They don't need to build their operation. It's tough. We are doing it for media companies in regulated environment."

Maimon said Aspire Global is active in different European gambling jurisdictions, namely UK, Denmark, Italy, Belgium, and more recently, in Portugal. He pointed out that Aspire Global is working on mainly regulated market even if the gray markets are profitable.

One of the main challenges that they had operating in a regulated market is that the company had to acquire so many licenses for a single product, according to Maimon.

"It is true, it is one of the most challenging things. When companies are saying, ok let's go enter this market, they don't know sometimes the work that the platform need to be dealt with, and the certification, and the development," the Aspire Global CEO said. "So it takes up to a year to enter a market with a platform. This is the work that we did for six different jurisdictions and we see it as strength of our platform."

Early this year, Aspire Global introduced its latest sports betting vertical at the ICE event in London.

"First of all we are the first platform provider that can provide a full turnkey solution for companies to operate on sport. So we are managing their day to day routine, not just providing the sport platform, but managing their operations, so support, VIP, fraud. This is one thing that is unique to Aspire," Maimon said.

"The second is that we integrated a very unique tool just for us, exclusive for Aspire Global operators, which is the bet recommendation. So when a player is coming, he doesn't need to know where to bet, we are recommending to him where to go, what are the best odds to play in, in order to have maximized his winnings. So this is something that we added recently,"  he added.

The founders will list Cryptonia Tokens on the relevant exchanges so they can appreciate in value and be exchanged for other funds. You can only use the tokens in countries that have a fully licensed and regulated online poker market.

The team will return 35% of collected rake to the players on a monthly basis in the form of jackpots, through the affiliate system, leaderboards, tournament guarantees, loyalty programs. They will invest 10% in attracting new players.

What Games Can You Play?

It looks like the first game available will be Texas No-Limit Hold'em with the likes of Open Facre Chinese, 5 Card Omaha and All-In Poker. The Cryptonia team is very proud of their Chinese Poker product and lists it as one of four things going for it that CoinPoker and Virtue Poker don't. The brand images of the Heartland Poker Tour and Westgate Las Vegas took a scuffing after someone decided to offer players a 50% discount on seats when it appeared an overlay was forthcoming angering players who paid full whack.

Money.

I’ve been fortunate enough to work for a variety of live tournament operators throughout the years, and I can say with some authority that when it comes to 'guarantee squeaky bum time’ typically sane, respectable people act like monkeys watching a bonfire of bananas.

Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) and the Westgate in Las Vegas aren't the first live tour to try a shady move to reach a guarantee, and they won't be the last, but what an almighty cock-up.

The $1,650 buy-in, $500,000 Guaranteed HPT Main Event at the Westgate, Las Vegas should have been a celebration. It was the first time the HPT had appeared in Las Vegas since 2014, and both outfits were expecting a big field.

334+ to be exact.

But it didn't work out that way.

According to numerous press reports, sometime on Saturday afternoon (towards the end of late registration on Day 3), the respected HPT Tournament Director (TD), Jeremy Smith, sent a tweet to his 1,369 followers that there were only 300 players on the clock meaning a potential $69,000 overlay.

No biggie.

Poker tournaments crash and burn against the rocks of lofty guarantees all of the time.

But this one was different.

The Tweet From The Trooper

As the clock ebbed away and the overlay was looking likely Poker Vlogger, The Trooper, sent out the following tweet.

“If you’d like to play the HPT Main Event @WestgateVegas in one hour for an $800 discount ($850 instead of $1650) DM me immediately and start heading to Westgate.”

Hang on?

What about the 300 players who ponied up the price on the tin?

While this is going on, Ben Yu is at the cash desk readying to fire his third $1,650 bullet when he hears about the same announcement coming from the sportsbook.

Someone ushers Yu towards a tournament/casino official, where the officials ask Yu if he is one of 'Matusow’s boys?’

Nope.

Get out of the way then.

Yu posts about the snub on Twitter and a whole lot of fuss ensues, with Matusow the only person not fussing.

Truth or Lies

People begin tweeting Jeremy Smith to ask what's going on. Smith denies that the decision had anything to do with the HPT – it was a Westgate decision.

More dissatisfied players voice concerns over Twitter.

Players even threaten to boycott HPT events.

Apart from Smith’s comments, neither the HPT or the Westgate comment officially about the debacle until poker writers start tapping keys with a furious swagger, and then the Westgate releases this…

"End of reg for the ‪@HPTPoker Main Event we chose to pay a portion of the entry fee for select VIP. Full $1,650 entry$ accounted for in the $500k main event that continues through 4/9. WR is upholding all prize packages & guarantees are being upheld.  Good luck to the participants."

So there is no problem?
