REPORT: Acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement set to retire

Posted: 01 May 2018 10:20 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by CBSNEWS.COM:

Tom Homan, the acting director of the agency charged with combating illegal immigration, is stepping down, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Monday.

Homan has been one of the most public faces of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration and oversaw a 40 percent surge in deportation arrests, along with other controversial changes including policies on making courthouse arrests and detaining pregnant women.

The article goes on to state the following:

The Senate had yet to act on his confirmation, which could have been contentious, given the opposition by some to his hard-line policy views.

Homan, whose retirement will start in June, published the following statement on the ICE.gov website:

"It has been the honor of my life to lead the men and women of ICE for more than a year. The decision to leave federal service after more than 34 years is bittersweet, but my family has sacrificed a lot in order for me to serve and it's time for me to focus on them. I am humbled and inspired by the 20,000 American patriots who serve this agency and protect our nation, increasingly in the face of unfair and false criticism from politicians and the media.

Because of their tremendous dedication and hard work, we have made significant progress this past year in enforcing our nation's immigration and customs laws, and in protecting public safety and national security. I will continue to be a strong advocate for the workforce and for the ICE mission."

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by DAILYCALLER.COM:

Condoleezza Rice gave President Trump three pieces of advice Tuesday for negotiating with Kim Jong Un and North Korea.

"First of all don't try to negotiate the details with Kim Jong Un," the former secretary of state said on Fox & Friends. "Leave that to people who understand all the nuances of this situation. There are other countries who have interests here. Japan, for instance has interests here. South Korea of course has interests here. So that is the first thing, really recognize that others are at stake."

The article goes on to state the following:

"Secondly, don't be anxious about moving American military forces," she continued. "American military forces are a stabilizing force, not just on the Korean peninsula, but in the region as a whole."

REPORT: US issues critical warning about liquid nicotine packets

Posted: 01 May 2018 09:48 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by APNEWS.COM:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health authorities issued warnings Tuesday to makers of liquid nicotine whose packaging resembles children’s juice boxes, candies and cookies.

The Food and Drug Administration said the packaging practice is illegal for vaping formulas and could lead to poisoning if children mistakenly drink the liquids, which are intended for use with e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Exposure to nicotine, even in small amounts, can cause seizures, coma and fatal heart problems in children.

Some of the packages targeted by regulators look like juice boxes, Warhead candies and Nilla Wafers.

The article goes on to state the following:

E-cigarettes are electronic devices that vaporize flavored liquid, which typically contains nicotine. Calls to poison control centers about nicotine formulas have increased in recent years, according to the FDA, with more than 8,000 cases involving children between 2012 and 2017.

"These are preventable accidents that have the potential to result in serious harm or even death," said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, in a statement. "Companies selling these products have a responsibility to ensure they aren't putting children in harm's way or enticing youth use."

Warnings were issued to 13 manufacturers, distributors and sellers. Several companies were cited for illegally selling their products to minors. Such warnings are not legally binding but the government can take companies to court if the issues are ignored.

REPORT: State bill would allow illegals to serve on government boards

Posted: 01 May 2018 09:30 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by SACBEE.COM:

Immigrants residing in California illegally would be able to serve on all state and local boards and commissions under a proposal introduced in the state Senate on Monday.

Senate Bill 174 amends existing state law to allow the appointment of any resident over the age of 18 to a civil office regardless of citizenship or immigration status. California law currently states that someone is incapable of holding office if they are not a citizen at the time of their appointment.

The article goes on to state the following:

"California is stronger when we utilize talents of all our residents, and opening state and local boards and commissions to every Californian will allow us to better serve our diverse communities,” Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens and the bill’s author, said in a statement. "Undocumented Californians are our neighbors, co-workers and parents, and as lawmakers we can't make good policy if their voices are left out of the discussion.”

Lara’s office said each board or commission would have to analyze federal law to determine if the appointee can be compensated for the work based on their individual immigration status. Federal law prohibits residents without legal status from seeking salaried positions, for example, but immigrants granted work authorization under the Federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program would be eligible for pay, Lara’s office said.

Lara introduced the bill on Monday in the latest move by state lawmakers to provide more opportunities to immigrants in California without legal authorization as the Donald Trump administration moves in the opposite direction. Lara has carried bills to expand health care coverage to undocumented immigrants over the years, including a proposal this year to offer Medi-Cal coverage to undocumented adults.

REPORT: Secret donors helped finance Trump dossier team research after election

Posted: 01 May 2018 08:23 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by FOXNEWS.COM:

The team of opposition researchers behind the infamous anti-Trump dossier embraced by the FBI were paid big bucks to continue trying to dig up dirt on Russian meddling in American politics – even after the 2016 presidential election.

That revelation, buried inside a 243-page report released by House Intelligence Committee Republicans last week, has sparked new speculation about the identities of the secretive donors who were funding the post-election project.

The article goes on to state the following:

According to the House Intelligence Committee report, Daniel J. Jones – the president of the Penn Quarter Group and a former staffer for Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein – "secured the services" of dossier author and former British spy Christopher Steele "to continue exposing Russian interference" after the election. It also hired an associate of Steele's and the opposition research firm Fusion GPS.

That report doesn't list the donors. But Jones told the FBI that the Penn Quarter Group was being funded by seven to 10 wealthy donors, primarily in New York and California, who provided approximately $50 million to the firm, it said.

Fusion and Steele originally teamed up during the 2016 campaign to compile a dossier of salacious and unverified allegations about Trump’s connections to Russia, paid for by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign through law firm Perkins Coie. The dossier allegedly was used by the DOJ and FBI to obtain surveillance warrants to spy on a member of the Trump team.

Fox News also reported additional details on the tight connection Jones has to Sen. Dianne Feinstein:

The Federalist first reported Jones' connection to Steele in February – ties that were confirmed in the House report.

The Intelligence Committee report released last week redacts the full name of Jones in a footnote. But the report links to Jones' LinkedIn and firm online biographies, making clear he is the individual in question.

Jones, who once worked for the FBI, also worked under Feinstein on the Senate Intelligence Committee. A Feinstein spokesman did not return a request for comment. Feinstein has played a significant role in the saga over Steele's dossier. In January, Feinstein made news when she released a transcript of the committee's interview with Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson.

The article goes on to state the following:

The Russian jet came within about 20 feet of the U.S. Navy aircraft, but the American pilots told officials they never felt threatened or unsafe.

REPORT: Major publication pulls out of future White House Correspondents’ Dinners

Posted: 01 May 2018 07:59 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by THEWRAP.COM:

The Hill will no longer participate in future White House Correspondents' Dinners, the organization's chairman, James A. Finkelstein, said in a letter to the White House Correspondents Association on Tuesday.

"The Hill, which has participated in the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner for many years, does not plan at this time to participate in the event moving forward," wrote Finkelstein in letter addressed to the association's executive director, Steven Thomma.

The article goes on to state the following:

"The kind of jokes told by this year's headliner, Michelle Wolf, were out of line for an event that's supposed to be fun — and fair," he said. "Based on what Americans witnessed on national television at Saturday night's dinner, a once-fine evening celebrating the strong, free press the WHCA speaks of has turned into an angry display and ad-hominem attacks.

The Hill is the first major publication to officially ditch the event after Wolf's performance. In her monologue, the "Daily Show" veteran offered a litany of raunchy barbs and cutting personal shot at press secretary Sarah Sanders' appearance.

"We hope the dinner can get back to talking about the importance of the Fourth Estate without the kind of ugly sideshow that completely overshadowed the event this year," Finkelstein added in his letter. "Along those lines, we will happily donate in the future to the WHCA scholarship program and hope this program can produce future journalists to fight for freedom of the press while remaining non-partisan."

REPORT: Border Patrol catching caravan migrants illegally sneaking into US

Posted: 01 May 2018 07:39 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by WASHINGTONEXAMINER.COM:

Border Patrol agents apprehended suspected members of the Central American caravan who attempted to trespass into the United States instead of applying for asylum on three different occasions this weekend.

Approximately 25 people, including three nationals from India, were spotted and taken into custody by immigration officers after illegally entering California by Imperial Beach, an international boundary fence where caravan members have been televised climbing and sitting on.

The article goes on to state the following:

The Trump administration announced late Monday criminal charges against 11 people it caught crossing a few miles west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry in California from Mexico. Others apprehended but not being prosecuted at this time were from Guatemala, India, Mexico, and El Salvador.

"The United States will not stand by as our immigration laws are ignored and our nation's safety is jeopardized,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement.

“U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman and his team should be commended for quickly filing illegal entry charges for individuals apprehended along the southwestern border. We will continue to work with our partners in each U.S. Attorney's Offices to aggressively pursue prosecutions of criminal illegal entry."

The charges were filed in the U.S. District Court for the South District of California. One of the 11 suspects was additionally charged with illegal entry after being previously deported, which is a felony.

Study reveals loneliness reaches epidemic levels

Posted: 01 May 2018 07:26 AM PDT

A new survey exploring the impact of loneliness in the United States conducted by global health service company Cigna revealed that most American adults are considered lonely.

In partnership with market research firm Ipsos, the survey measured loneliness by a score of 43 or higher on the UCLA Loneliness Scale, a 20-item questionnaire developed to assess subjective feelings of loneliness and social isolation.

According to PR Newswire, more than 20,000 U.S. adults ages 18 years and older participated in the survey, which found:

  • Nearly half of Americans report sometimes or always feeling alone (46 percent) or left out (47 percent).
  • One in four Americans (27 percent) rarely or never feel as though there are people who really understand them.
  • Two in five Americans sometimes or always feel that their relationships are not meaningful (43 percent) and that they are isolated from others (43 percent).
  • One in five people report they rarely or never feel close to people (20 percent) or feel like there are people they can talk to (18 percent).
  • Americans who live with others are less likely to be lonely (average loneliness score of 43.5) compared to those who live alone (46.4). However, this does not apply to single parents/guardians (average loneliness score of 48.2) – even though they live with children, they are more likely to be lonely.
  • Only around half of Americans (53 percent) have meaningful in-person social interactions, such as having an extended conversation with a friend or spending quality time with family, on a daily basis.
  • Generation Z (adults ages 18-22) is the loneliest generation and claims to be in worse health than older generations.
  • Social media use alone is not a predictor of loneliness; respondents defined as very heavy users of social media have a loneliness score (43.5) that is not markedly different from the score of those who never use social media (41.7).

“We view a person’s physical, mental and social health as being entirely connected,” said David M. Cordani, president and chief executive officer of Cigna. “It’s for this reason that we regularly examine the physical, mental and social needs of our people and the communities they live in. In analyzing this closely, we’re seeing a lack of human connection, which ultimately leads to a lack of vitality – or a disconnect between mind and body. We must change this trend by reframing the conversation to be about ‘mental wellness’ and ‘vitality’ to speak to our mental-physical connection. When the mind and body are treated as one, we see powerful results.”

The survey also revealed some positive findings which reinforced the social nature of humans and the importance of having communities. Those who were found to be less lonely were more likely to have regular, meaningful, in-person interactions; had good overall physical and mental health; had achieved balance in daily activities; and were employed and have positive relationships with their coworkers.

People who are involved in frequent meaningful in-person interactions were found to have much lower loneliness scores and report better health than those who rarely interact with others face-to-face.

Working to achieve the right balance of sleep, work, socializing with friends, family and “me time” is connected to lower loneliness scores. Balance is critical in these areas, as those who get too little or too much of these activities report higher loneliness scores.

REPORT: Romney voices praise for Trump’s first year in office

Posted: 01 May 2018 07:14 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by TheHill.com:

Former GOP presidential nominee and current Senate candidate Mitt Romney praised President Trump’s first year in office on Tuesday, saying it was similar to what the first year of a Romney administration would look like.

In response to a question from a voter in Utah, Romney seemed to indicate that he largely approved of the policies pursued by the Trump administration during Trump’s first year in the White House, calling it “better than expected,”the Washington Examiner reports.

The article goes on to state the following:

"His first year is very similar to things I'd have done my first year," Romney said. “The things he's actually done have been better than I expected."

Romney quickly added, however, that he would continue to oppose the president if he said something the former Massachusetts governor viewed as “racist” or “divisive.”

"If he says something which I believe is racist or divisive and serious, then I'll point out that I disagree with that," said Romney, who Trump had feuded with on and off but who also was considered a candidate to be the president’s first secretary of State.

"But I'm an honest enough person that if he does something right — and by the way he's done a number of things right — I'll be fully supportive of those things. I will support the president's agenda when it's good for Utah, and good for the country, and so far that's been the case," Romney said.

A-List actress sues Harvey Weinstein

Posted: 01 May 2018 06:58 AM PDT

Actress Ashley Judd filed a lawsuit Monday against Harvey Weinstein, claiming defamation and sexual harassment, among other allegations, including that Weinstein made negative remarks about her to filmmaker Peter Jackson, which cost her a role in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Judd claims in the lawsuit that she believed that something “unseen” had been stymieing her career, but she not realize until December that it was Weinstein.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Judd said she was talking with Jackson and his team in 1998 about being cast in one of two major roles in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but Weinstein “torpedoed” the opportunity by telling them she “was a ‘nightmare’ to work with and should be avoided ‘at all costs.'”

“The pathetic reality, however, was that Weinstein was retaliating against Ms. Judd for rejecting his sexual demands approximately one year earlier, when he cornered her in a hotel room under the guise of discussing business,” wrote attorney Theodore Boutrous Jr. “A self-described ‘benevolent dictator’ who has bragged that ‘I can be scary,’ Weinstein used his power in the entertainment industry to damage Ms. Judd's reputation and limit her ability to find work.”

Judd said she had no idea why she was not offered a role in the films until she read a December interview with Jackson in which he said at the time that he had no reason to question what he was told by Weinstein, but that he now suspects that the information was false.

Weinstein is being sued by Judd for defamation, sexual harassment, intentional interference with prospective economic advantage and unfair competition.

In response to Judd’s lawsuit, a representative for Weinstein said Monday, "The most basic investigation of the facts will reveal that Mr. Weinstein neither defamed Ms. Judd nor ever interfered with Ms. Judd's career, and instead not only championed her work but also repeatedly approved her casting for two of his movies over the next decade. The actual facts will show that Mr. Weinstein was widely known for having fought for Ms. Judd as his first choice for the lead role in Good Will Hunting and, in fact, arranged for Ms. Judd to fly to New York to be considered for the role. Thereafter, Ms. Judd was hired for not one, but two of Mr. Weinstein's movies, Frida in 2002 and Crossing Over with Harrison Ford in 2009. We look forward to a vigorous defense of these claims."

Warning given about knife attacks on commerical flights

Posted: 01 May 2018 06:45 AM PDT

A pro-ISIS group known for its previous threats has circulated an online warning of knife attacks to be perpetrated aboard commercial airliners.

The poster, released from Al-Abd al-Faqir Media and distributed on Telegram and other online forums, depicts a clean-shaven dark-haired white man sitting in an aisle seat during a commercial flight, with a long-bladed knife in his hand.

“You will be an easy prey,” the poster reads in English, French and Arabic.

PJ Media reported that ISIS continues to distribute propaganda through the group’s official channels, but ISIS-supporting media groups have taken up the task of inspiring the grass-roots with suggested attack methods and targets.

According to Transportation Security Administration policy, the only knives allowed in carry-on bags are plastic or round-bladed butter knives. All other knives are required to be placed in checked baggage.

PJ Media noted, “This month Australia confirmed that one of their citizens was captured in an ISIS plot to bring down an Etihad Airways plane flying from Sydney to Abu Dhabi last year. The explosives were smuggled inside of a meat grinder and Barbie doll, and would have gotten onto the plane had it not been for an Etihad check-in employee at Sydney’s airport who flagged the bag for being 15 pounds over the weight limit.”

Australian officials called the terror attempt one of the "most sophisticated plots that has ever been attempted on Australian soil."

Hunt for teacher and student underway in US

Posted: 01 May 2018 06:28 AM PDT

Police in Mississippi are embroiled in a search for a high school student and a teacher who are believed to have fled together.

An alert was issued on Monday by police in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, regarding the disappearance of former school teacher Nicole Jackson, 30, who is currently free on $10,000 bail on charges of sexual battery in a position of trust, and student Oscar O’Neal, 16.

According to the “be on the lookout” alert, the pair could be traveling in a dark blue Chevy Impala with the license plate number FRA-4454, the Daily Mail reported.

In a Facebook post, the student’s father, Oscar O’Neal Jr., pleaded for the public’s assistance in the safe return of his son.

“If u see my son please contact me or my wife Lisa Oneal. We got the police involved,” O’Neal wrote. “His nickname is Lil Pooh but his real name is Oscar Oneal.”

The younger O’Neal is also believed to be nicknamed “Pooh Gotti.”

After Hattiesburg police received a tip in March that Jackson had been conducting an inappropriate relationship with a student, they launched an investigation. Jackson, who had worked with the Forest County School District for several years, subsequently resigned from her position at the Earl Travillion Attendance Center and turned herself in to police on April 10.

According to her Facebook profile, Jackson is married and has at least one child.

The age of sexual consent in Mississippi is 16, although state law prohibits a person in a position of authority, including a teacher, from engaging in sexual penetration with a person under the age of 18.
