Blood Hook (Vinegar Syndrome, Blu/DVD Combo)

7 years ago, Peter's grandfather went missing under mysterious circumstances. Now, Peter and his friends have returned to the placid Wisconsin town to check out his inherited lake house and to partake in the annual 'Muskie Madness' fishing competition. Soon after his arrival, Peter begins to sense that something isn't quite right, but none of his friends, nor the local sheriff, will believe him. But as townsfolk and tourists begin to disappear, Peter becomes determined to solve the mystery, as well as that of his grandfather's disappearance, and soon finds himself facing off against a fish hook wielding madman!

The feature film debut from director Jim Mallon (Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie), BLOOD HOOK is a distinctly comedic slasher that mixes copious bloodshed with wry satire. Never released domestically in its original version, Vinegar Syndrome presents this under-seen regional horror oddity fully uncut, and featuring previously censored gore and mayhem, on Blu-ray, in a fresh cinematographer-approved restoration from its original camera negative!

As they wander the wilderness and reminisce, they're struck by a rising feeling of dread: they are not alone. A mysterious, silent stranger in sunglasses — The Hiker — is stalking their every move. Suddenly, they find themselves the hunted prey in a deranged killer's terrifying game. The nerve-shredding feature debut from Sam Patton will make you think twice before venturing into the woods.

Terror (Vinegar Syndrome, Blu/DVD Combo)

The country estate of filmmaker James Garrick has been haunted for centuries by a mysterious and deadly curse. Everyone in his family line comes to a gruesome end at the hand of an unknown supernatural assailant. When Garrick's long-lost cousin Ann unexpectedly arrives at his secluded manor, mayhem and bloodshed soon follow. But is Ann the person behind these acts of carnage or could something more horrifying be afoot?

Taking inspiration from Italian gothic horror films and giallos, Norman J. Warren's TERROR features lurid gelled lighting, bizarre plot twists, and copious amounts of brutal bloodshed. A classic of British-made 70s horror, Vinegar Syndrome proudly brings TERROR to Blu-ray, newly restored from its camera negative and featuring all of its jaw dropping carnage fully intact.

Interview: Michael Gross on His New Adventures in TREMORS: A COLD DAY IN HELL and Keeping the Franchise Going

Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:17 AM PDT

Arriving on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital platforms tomorrow is Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell, which follows franchise stalwart Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) and his son, Travis (Jamie Kennedy), to colder regions where recently unfrozen Graboids have been unearthed, causing all sorts of catastrophic problems up in the Great White North.

Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Gross for this latest Tremors, and he discussed Burt's journey throughout the series, the joy of collaborating with Kennedy, and the possibility of another Tremors film in the future. We also spoke with Gross about the potential of a Tremors crossover too, since there was a TV series in the works, but now that the pilot hasn't been picked up, it looks like Tremors will continue to be a film series for the foreseeable future.

Great to speak to you again, Michael, and congratulations on getting to come back for another Tremors. It's always a welcome sight to have Burt back in our lives, and I think you guys have really found a new, fun way to explore the idea of the Graboids this time around.

Michael Gross: You know, we're looking for change-ups now, what can we do that's different and interesting, and climate change seemed like the perfect entry point to this. We started tossing ideas around shortly after we did the fifth one, and we started thinking, "Wait a minute, the permafrost is melting. What if it's suddenly releasing these things that have been entrapped in the ice for hundreds of millions of years?" So, we decided to get out of the desert, for golly's sake, and see what happens.

One thing led to another, and it seemed like a perfect fit: a warming planet and the dangers it brings. You thought it was just going to be rising oceans, well, it's also Graboids, too—sorry folks. We should just really stick to the Paris Climate Accords or there will be big trouble up north.

This newest Tremors was interesting because there has been this evolution of the character of Burt over the years, and there are a lot of changes to him this time, which I won't go too much into detail because I don't want to ruin that for fans. But this is a much different ride for him, and I was wondering what was the most interesting aspect for you to be able to explore in this sequel?

Michael Gross: That's a good point. Professionally, he's at the top of his game. He knows what he's doing, he can kill Graboids. That's what he does. He's the expert, that's why people call him. Professionally, he's great. Personally, we wanted to begin to plumb the depths of who this man is and what really shakes him.

In Tremors 5, we were trying to explore "what does it mean for this loner, a totally isolated man, to have somebody come into his life, and they want to spend time with you?" How do you deal with that? It was something that Burt didn't even know was a possibility. And for this one, without spoiling anything, it was about Burt having to feed control to someone else. This is a man who believes in control at all times. He's about precision, control, doing things by the numbers and by the book, and to go against that is something very challenging for him. So, we wanted to take him to that edge, and for me, that was part of the fun.

I appreciated how well you and Jamie have come together over these two Tremors films and really made this back and forth between Travis and Burt really work to both films' advantages. How much fun was it to dig back into this relationship with Jamie again? And do you feel like you fell more into having a rapport because now you guys already have the last Tremors under your belts together?

Michael Gross: Yes, exactly. It was ever so much easier. We had a lot of fun together. Jamie has a great sense of humanity to him, but he's also a very silly man in all the right ways. I don't mean immature, but silly as someone who can have fun. It was a joy. We had a wonderful time together. They are a great oil and water mix, because that character of Travis is loosey-goosey, and Burt is nothing if not rigid, almost catatonically rigid, with a certain sense of paranoia. And Travis is seemingly worried about absolutely nothing.

If you had to give them slogans, Burt would say, "Look before you leap." Travis would say, "He who hesitates is lost." So, they are illogical partners in many ways, and that's part of the fun. There's obviously an affection that they have for each other, even if they drive each other nuts. But that's family.

In this film, they teased this idea in one of the scenes of Graboids being underwater, and it made me realize that we actually haven't seen that before. And because you've been living with this franchise for decades now, have you thought about where you would like to see Graboids go in the future? Have you guys had any discussions for the future?

Michael Gross: Well, you're absolutely right. In Tremors 5, there was this mutation where the little tongues, the tentacles, could go off on their own, and they became these free-range creatures. And in this one, they weren't changed so much as they just had different adaptations, where they can bore through ice and things like that. They're the Arctic Variety Graboid.

But we have discussed how they might change, and to be honest with you, if we had an unlimited budget, Heather, we could do almost anything. We were discussing this today. But some of the choices we make are constrained by budget. They really are. And unfortunately, because this is show business, where it's 5% show and 95% business, creative teams can come up with wonderful ideas, but the accountants will say, "Oh no, you can't do that. That's too expensive." So, it's a balancing act that Universal is constantly doing, but we just had a meeting today about a theoretical Tremors 7, so you never know.

I won't say too much here, but there is something in this new Tremors that could potentially be used as a means for a crossover between this film series and the new Tremors TV series that is in the works. Is that anything you've thought about at all?

Michael Gross: This is something that has not been talked about at all for the simple reason that I've heard nothing, nor have I been invited to be a part of that. Kevin Bacon, after all these years, has decided to do his own thing, and we've made it easier for him, because we've made five films after the first Tremors which have kept the fan base alive. But all I've heard so far are rumors, so I haven't heard anything about it.

So, my tendency is to say there will be no crossover because it feels like there are almost two different universes at work, and it seems like Kevin wants to do a very specific thing. But I do think we've done him a favor by keeping the franchise alive, because had there only been the first film, it might have gotten lost along the way, save for a few passionate fans out there. But I am glad that I've been able to be a part of that, and I have had such a ball keeping Tremors alive for all these years. It's been a total joy for me, and I'm grateful for the fans who have continued to follow along.

Hard to believe we've almost hit the halfway point of 2018 already, but here we are, with another great crop of VOD and digital releases to keep you busy over the next few weeks. May's digital releases kick off with a variety of titles on the 1st, including Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell, Dead List, Cartel 2045, Primal Rage, and The Unwilling, and just a few days later, both Altered Perception and Gehenna: Where Death Lives make their arrivals.

May 8th is the day when fans can head back to Wakanda for Black Panther's digital bow, and on May 11th, genre fans should definitely check out both Terminal and Revenge (which blew this writer away at last year's Fantastic Fest). Both The Manor and Island Zero hit various platforms on the 15th, and if you missed it in theaters, Annihilation makes its digital bow on the 22nd. Other films arriving the same day include The Strangers: Prey at Night, Eli Roth's Death Wish remake, A Taste of Phobia, and the new Scooby-Doo offshoot, Daphne & Velma, and May's digital releases wrap up with Feral from IFC Midnight on the 25th and They Remain on the 29th.

Cartel 2045 (Uncork'd Entertainment) – May 1st

The year is 2045, the continuing drug war has caused havoc between The United States and Mexico. Gear Side International, a robotics engineering company on the brink of bankruptcy, sells off their technology to the Cartel on the black market. With the advanced military robotics technology in the wrong hands the cartel uses it to their advantage; replacing their enforcers, hit men, and soldiers.

Dead List (High Octane Pictures) – May 1st

Calvin is competing with five other actors -- Zander, Scott, Kush, Jason and Bob -- for a major movie role. Stopping at nothing to win the role of a lifetime, he uses a demonic book to curse his fellow actors, with each actor being killed off in their own separate unique and terrifying chapter.

Primal Rage (Blue Fox Entertainment) – May 1st

PRIMAL RAGE follows Ashley (Casey Gagliardi) and Max Carr (Andrew Joseph Montgomery) as they, lost deep in the forest, are stalked by a terrifying creature that just might be Bigfoot. Soon, they find themselves embroiled in a strange land of Native American myth and legend turned all too real. Hopelessly trying to survive, with a handful of unsavory locals, they must fight against the monster in a desperate battle of life or death.

Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell (Universal Studios Home Entertainment) – May 1st

Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) and his son Travis Welker (Jamie Kennedy) find themselves up to their ears in Graboids and Ass-Blasters when they head to Canada to investigate a series of deadly giant worm attacks. Arriving at a remote research facility in the arctic tundra, Burt begins to suspect that Graboids are secretly being weaponized, but before he can prove his theory, he is sidelined by Graboid venom. With just 48 hours to live, the only hope is to create an antidote from fresh venom — but to do that, someone will have to figure out how to milk a Graboid!

The Unwilling (Vision Films) – May 1st

David Harris (David Lipper) is normal in almost every way, but has to fight through a crippling obsessive-compulsive disorder, brought on by his abusive father during his childhood. His OCD forces him to repeat movements and phrases and confines him to the safety of his home. Following his father's death, David's estranged relatives arrive to hear the reading of the will in anticipation for their piece of the fortune. They are surprised by the delivery of a "Lovecraft" style antique box instead. The box takes hold of their inner most desires one by one and entices the dangerous behavior that ensues. Will they last through the night or be wishing they never gave into temptation?

Altered Perception (SKD/Cinedigm) – May 4th

When the government attempts to produce a designer drug aimed at correcting the false perceptions that people develop during trauma and stress, the implications are deadly. Advertised as a cure for socio-political tensions, four couples volunteer, but end up with far more than they bargained for as their past and present are examined while taking variations of the new drug. However, this causes them to doubt their own memory, perceptions - and even their own sanity in this thriller in the vein of Disturbing Behavior and The Faculty.

Gehenna: Where Death Lives (Uncork'd Entertainment) – May 4th

Encompassing horror, suspense and a twist that will blow your mind, Gehenna fixes on five people who enter a hidden bunker from WW2, and realize it's way more than a bunker. Some fates are MUCH worse than death.

Black Panther (Marvel) – May 8th

When young King T'Challa is drawn into conflict with an old foe that puts his homeland Wakanda and the entire world at risk, he must release Black Panther's full power to save them.

House of Evil (Breaking Glass Pictures) – May 11th

Based on true events, HOUSE OF EVIL follows a young couple who, in the 1970s, move into a large, remote house in the countryside with hopes of starting a family. However, it's not long before they are menaced by ghosts and a darker demonic presence.

Revenge (Shudder/NEON) – May 11th

Jen (fearlessly embodied by Matilda Lutz, Rings) is enjoying a romantic getaway with her wealthy boyfriend which is suddenly disrupted when his sleazy friends arrive for an unannounced hunting trip. Tension mounts in the house until the situation abruptly––and viciously––intensifies, culminating in a shocking act that leaves Jen left for dead. Unfortunately for her assailants, Jen survives and reemerges with a relentless, wrathful intent: revenge.

A white-knuckle tale of transgression and transformation, REVENGE gloriously blurs the lines of vengeance and survival while simultaneously delivering a ferocious dissection of gender and genre.

Terminal (RLJE Films) – May 11th

In the dark heart of a sprawling, anonymous city, Terminal follows the twisting tales of two assassins carrying out a sinister mission, a teacher battling a fatal illness, an enigmatic janitor and a curious waitress leading a dangerous double life. Murderous consequences unravel in the dead of night as their lives all intertwine at the hands of a mysterious criminal mastermind hell-bent on revenge.

Island Zero (Freestyle Digital Media) – May 15th

Inhabitants of a fishing island off the coast of Maine find themselves mysteriously cut off from the outside world after the ferry suddenly stops coming. All the phones have gone dead and every boat sent to the mainland fails to return. When dead bodies turn up along the water's edge, the hardy band of survivors must find out who, or what, is killing them.

The Manor (Lionsgate) – May 15th

Still haunted by the demons of a childhood tragedy, Amy (Christina Robinson) checks out of an asylum on her eighteenth birthday. But things get weird when Amy's mother takes her to a rustic resort to visit her strange, sadistic relatives. When hunters and religious fanatics join the party, Amy can no longer tell fantasy from reality, watching helplessly as the blood spills anew. This shocking horror-thriller also stars Kevin Nash and Rachel True.

Annihilation (Paramount Home Media Distribution) – May 22nd

Biologist and former soldier Lena (Academy Award® winner* Natalie Portman) is shocked when her missing husband (Oscar Isaac) comes home near death from a top-secret mission into The Shimmer, a mysterious quarantine zone no one has ever returned from. They Remain (Giant Interactive/Paladin) – May 29th

Based on the 2010 short story, "-30-" by award-winning author Laird Barron, THEY REMAIN explores the evolving relationship between Keith and Jessica, two scientists who are employed by a vast, impersonal corporation to investigate an unspeakable horror that took place at the remote encampment of a mysterious cult. Working and living in a state-of-the-art, high tech environment that is completely at odds with their surroundings, they spend their days gathering physical evidence, analyzing it, and reporting on their findings.

The intensity of their work, and their extreme isolation, bring the pair closer. But, when Jessica discovers a mysterious artifact of unknown origin, the dynamic between them changes: secrets are kept, sexual tensions arise, and paranoia sets in. Keith begins to have visions and is unable to distinguish whether they are nightmares or hauntings. Having lost all sense of what is real and what is imagined, all he knows is that the horror he and Jessica have been sent to uncover—a horror that could be biological, psychological, or supernatural— now threatens his very survival.

Horror Highlights: ANGELS OF MERCY Indiegogo Campaign, MISTER STITCHES, BODACIOUS CREED AND THE FRISCO SYNDICATE

Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:37 AM PDT

Headlining today's Horror Highlights is an Indiegogo campaign for Angels of Mercy, a new horror film that stars (and was co-written by) Owen Kent, an actor with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. In the groundbreaking film for the disabled community, Kent plays a character with SMA, and while the movie has been shot, it is now looking for funding to help with the post-production process, and we have information on how you can support the project. We also have details on Michael Smith's short film Mister Stitches and Kickstarter campaign info for author Jonathan Fesmire's new novel Bodacious Creed and the Frisco Syndicate.

Angels of Mercy Indiegogo Campaign: Press Release: "Angels of Mercy is a groundbreaking horror film that challenges Hollywood's representation of the Disabled Community. Leading the cast is Owen Kent, an actor and filmmaker with the condition Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Owen plays a hacker named Zach, who has moved himself to the rural forests of northern California to escape public scorn. When a eugenics cult descends upon Zach's home, he must use his wits to make it through the night alive.

"Whether you like the movie, or you hate it, you definitely haven't ever seen anything like it." - Andrew Balcof, Co-writer and Director of Angels of Mercy.

While misrepresentation, or a lack of representation, for certain groups has started to enter the discussion and creep through the cracks of the Hollywood system, the disabled community has seemingly been ignored. Movies like Me Before You and even The Theory of Everything have cast able-bodied actors for disabled roles. Some have deemed this act to be "crip face." Angels of Mercy aims to change the exclusion of disabled actors and provide a space for those with disabilities in the film industry, in front of and behind the camera.

To get a feature film off the ground is a feat, but if there ever was a miracle, the fact that Angels of Mercy made it through principal photography would be that miracle. In addition to a myriad of mishaps, including a break-in at the crew house, the film's financing fell through two months before production. By the skin of their teeth, through private investments, fundraising parties, and credit card debt, Andrew, Owen, and Johnny Griffith, one of Angels of Mercy's producer, obtained a budget and were able to shoot the film.

"We didn't make this film because we thought it would be easy. We made it because it needed to be done." - Owen Kent, Co-writer and Lead Actor of Angels of Mercy.

Although the film is shot, it is not complete. Andrew, Owen, and Johnny have set up an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for the postproduction of Angels of Mercy (https://tinyurl.com/AoMPostPro). Almost like a championship sports team, the trio of filmmakers have
adopted the motto, "Just find a way to get it done," and that's what they'll have to do to have a finished product for the anticipated completion date this fall.

Mister Stitches in Production: Press Release: "After six years, award-nominated makeup artist and filmmaker Michael Smith is in production on his SAG/AFTRA short film, Mister Stitches.

A supernatural thriller set in 1938, Stitches details the grisly events following a botched bank robbery and an attempt by the robbers to use a secluded farm as a hideout while on the lam.

Stitches is a unique morality tale and period thriller that's set far enough in the past to be the stuff of folklore but you can visit the location and still feel the terror from that night eighty years ago.

Smith raised a few hundred dollars with a crowdfunding campaign in 2013 with which he produced a promotional trailer to pitch to potential investors and gain a fan base.

Bringing Stitches to life has been a goal for Smith since he first conceptualized the story in 2009. Smith says "As I explored remains of houses reclaimed by the dense forests of rural southeast Ohio, I wondered what tales these places could tell of joys and tragedies experienced by an average family long since passed on, what if something extraordinarily awful happened there that has been lost to time? There's something here that would lend itself to a unique story and the gravestones in forgotten family cemeteries tell no tales, so I will".

In 2015, Smith launched the website: www.misterstitchesmovie.com to showcase photos and videos of the production as well as talent bios.

The story has piqued the interest of local professional stage and film actors, including some who've worked in Hollywood. Smith says "Central Ohio has some fantastic talent and some of the film's original cast are slated to reprise their roles from the 2013 trailer shoot which I'm especially happy about".

Some notables attached to the project include, SAG/AFTRA actor Ralph Scott returning as gang leader Hank Smith. Scott is an active member of the Columbus independent movie scene and professional stage actor with CATCO and others. His acting encompasses both stage and screen. He can been seen in the films "God Don't Make The Laws" with Paul Sorvino, "Recoil," and multi-award winning "Oracabessa" as well as national and regional advertisements. Additionally, SAG/AFTRA actor Todd Covert returns to play 'handsome' Jack Castille, one of the gangsters. Beth Josephsen-Simon, a fantastic actress who's appeared on stage in the U.K as well as in the States is playing the farmer's wife.

A local vintage car club to has agreed to be 'traffic' in an exterior scene to be filmed in West Virginia which Michael is most excited about since finding cars of that period is far more difficult than finding authentic locations in the historic villages of southern Ohio.

The $4,000 budget for the approximately thirty minute short goes toward paying SAG/AFTRA talent, period wardrobe, authentic props, special effects, ost-production and distribution costs.

To learn more about the film, visit the Mister Stitches website at: www.misterstitchesmovie.com or https://www.facebook.com/misterstitchesfilm."

Bodacious Creed and the Frisco Syndicate Kickstarter Campaign: From author Jonathan Fesmire: "Hello everyone! My name is Jonathan Fesmire. I'm a full-time writer and proud steampunk.

Last year, I published my novel, Bodacious Creed: a Steampunk Zombie Western which started out as a Kickstarter. It more than met my funding goal and gave backers the opportunity to help create characters that shaped the story. Readers love the novel, which has more than 50 reviews, all four and five stars, and is selling well.

Yes, Kickstarter is a great place to help fund novels!

Now, I'm working on the sequel, Bodacious Creed and the Frisco Syndicate. This Kickstarter will help fund it, allowing me to pay for professional editing, cover art, and a portion of my reader's fee for the Audible edition.

Like its predecessor, Bodacious Creed and the Frisco Syndicate will be full of steampunk technology, gunfights, mystery, and well-rounded characters. These include the hero, the resurrected U.S. Marshal, James Creed, and the brothel madam and inventor, Anna Lynn Boyd. It will also include a full cast of supporting characters.

While the first novel took place in an alternate version of my home town of Santa Cruz, California, in 1876, the second will happen mostly in San Francisco.

What was San Francisco like at the time? Wild, rowdy, and dangerous. I've been doing extensive research on the city and its most notorious criminal district, The Barbary Coast, where much of the tale will take place. In addition to historical crime, add a syndicate raising the dead with steam-based technology, and we have a formula for the sort of danger Creed was born to confront. His greatest challenges lie ahead.

Check out the video and any updates. Once we reach the goal, I'll add stretch goals. Also, have a look at the rewards and become a backer! Everyone backer gets something. Even at $1, you will get a large, high quality jpeg of the wrap-around trade paperback cover. I invite you to become part of James "Bodacious" Creed's next adventure!"

Visit Kickstarter to learn more, and visit Fesmire's official website for additional details on his work.
