Relying on the same skills that he honed during the war, Calvin must set out to save the free world yet again. "...right before they kill you, they'll start to twitch..." Its eerie music (coupled perfectly with artwork by Richard P. Clark) is reminiscent of a John Carpenter movie, but the trailer for John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction: Twitch #2 teases a new adventure on the printed page rather than the big screen, one that looks to be just as cinematic—and scary—as the stories told from Carpenter's lens.

Due out on January 30th from Storm King Productions, John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction: Twitch #2 is featured in the new trailer below, and we also have a look at both covers for the second issue written by Duane Swierczynski and illustrated by Richard Clark. To learn more, keep an eye on Storm King Productions' official website.

Astrophysicist Marisa Stringfellow broke out of the observatory thinking she'd be able stop an alien entity on the rampage in the Antelope Valley desert. Lieutenant Pinkerton, meanwhile, thinks Stringfellow may be suffering from heatstroke. "How can you tell they're aliens?" Stringfellow replies, "Because right before they kill you, they'll start to twitch..."

Interview: Sarah Paulson on Stepping into the World of M. Night Shyamalan’s GLASS

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 01:16 PM PST

From American Horror Story to American Crime Story and recent appearances in Bird Box and Ocean's 8, Sarah Paulson is one of my favorite actresses working today, and I was very excited when it was announced that she would be part of the cast for M. Night Shyamalan's Glass.

During a recent press day, I had a chance to catch up with Sarah, who told me all about her love of M. Night Shyamalan's movies and excitement to join the cast, working with James McAvoy, and why she enjoys taking on genre roles:

How did you get involved with Glass? Was this something that M. Night Shyamalan reached out directly to you about? Or is it something where you were a fan and contacted him?

Sarah Paulson: I got a phone call from my agent saying that M. Night Shyamalan was coming to Los Angeles and wanted to sit down with me, and I was like, "What? He wants to sit down with me?" I was very excited because I'm a huge Night fan and have seen all of his movies in the theater like a rabid fan, almost always on opening weekend. So I was very excited, but I was in the middle of shooting American Horror Story and The Post at the same time, and so I literally had not a free moment during the two days he was going to be in town. So, he very kindly came to my trailer on the set of American Horror Story, and he sat with me for about an hour during my lunch break, and we talked mostly not about the movie.

And then he touched on a few things [regarding Glass], but then he said, "Full disclosure, I have not finished writing, and right now I don't know if Dr. Staple is going to be a man or a woman, so I can't promise you anything, but I remain your fan, and I just wanted to meet you." We exchanged phone numbers and, a week later, he texted me saying, "I still haven't come to any decision. I haven't forgot about you, and sit tight. I'll know what I want to do soon." And then about a week or two weeks after that, I got a text saying, "Would you call me?" And I'm sure I fumbled the phone trying to call as quickly as I possibly could, and he said, "I just wanted to see if you would consider being in my movie," and I burst into tears promptly because that's just sort of what I do. It's embarrassing but true, and I hadn't even read the script, so I didn't even know what I was saying yes to, but I didn't care.

Yeah, I think many people would have done the exact same thing in your shoes. Once you got the script and you started reading more about Dr. Ellie Staple, what were your thoughts about her specialization? With as popular as superhero movies are these days, people thinking that they really are superheroes is probably more common than people would think.

Sarah Paulson:   I think we all like to believe that we're capable of something extraordinary. What it really means when you distill it to the bare bones or to the crux of it is everybody just wants to be seen for being the unique human being that they are, and this is a sort of situation where these things are pushed to the extreme. David, from the sorrow of losing his wife; and Elijah, from his isolation and years of being a literal broken person; and Kevin Crumb, with all of his childhood trauma, the way they have figured out [how] to survive these traumas and these horrific experiences may be to find themselves believing something more about themselves than others would like them to—namely, my character.

This is essentially The Avengers of the M. Night Shyamalan universe. Being a fan of his movies all these years, how was it for you to be in the middle of this epic showdown?

Sarah Paulson: There's the scene in the movie where we're in that bubblegum pink room, and I'm sitting in there, and Sam gets wheeled in, and then all of a sudden, all three of them are lined up, and they're all facing me. And that would be a heady day at work for anyone, being across from Sam Jackson, James McAvoy, and Bruce Willis. For me, who had seen Unbreakable and Split, and had loved them both, and looking at all of them in their iconic characters and in their iconic personalities, and all of them with their colors, and Elijah in the purple, and James in the mustard, and Bruce in his green, and me having to, in some sense, have a lot of authority and power in that room… it was a challenging day.

I was intimidated to be sure, and then you top it all off with Night coming over and giving me notes. So it was just really a challenging day to try to keep my wits about me, and still try to do what I was being paid to do, and what I was honored to do, and at the same time having a total panic attack and not being able to believe what I was seeing.

I can imagine that working with James McAvoy had to be challenging because he's playing all of these characters and you have to react to them differently as well. Can you talk about your experience with him?

Sarah Paulson: It's difficult for him, but he makes it look like a walk in the park. I've never seen anything so mind-bending; to watch an actor just jump from one personality to the next personality, and each one so fully realized. It was like having a front row seat in a master class with the greatest actor of all time. There was something almost Olympian in nature in terms of the athleticism behind it. And so it was difficult only in that it was hard to manage my mind being blown in the back of my head, and trying to, again, keep my cool while I was watching something that I felt, from an acting standpoint, was so special. It's one thing for you to sit in a dark theater and watch it. I was in the room when he was doing it, and it was electrifying.

Being a fan of genre films and having been in American Horror Story, Bird Box, and now Glass, do you find that you naturally gravitate toward genre roles?

Sarah Paulson: I think it was happenstance at first with American Horror Story, but I do sort of think I come alive the most or maybe I'm just sort of an extreme person. I did burst into tears when he told me I got the part, so maybe living in the world of extremes is a good place for me as a performer, and I tend to gravitate towards knowing that I can go places in these genres that maybe in more traditional environments I may not feel as much permission to go to some of those places. And so maybe that's why I gravitate towards it, I guess, or why they gravitate towards me. Night did call me.

Of course, our readers are excited to see you in Glass, but we also want to keep them posted on what's next. What projects do you have coming up that really excite you?

Sarah Paulson: Well, I'm about to start shooting Ratched for Netflix in about three weeks, which is basically the origin story for Nurse Ratched from [One Flew Over the] Cuckoo's Nest. And, I have a movie I did with Aneesh Chaganty, who did Searching, that was a really wonderful movie with John Cho, and I think that's coming out next year sometime.

Mondo’s Death Waltz Recording Company to Release John Carpenter and Alan Howarth’s THEY LIVE Score on Vinyl

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 11:39 AM PST

Since its initial release in 1988, John Carpenter's They Live has only gotten better with each passing year. One of the reasons it has endured as long as it has (in addition to its performances, epic one-liners, and social relevancy) is the bone-rattling score by Carpenter and Alan Howarth, and Mondo's Death Waltz Recording Company is looking to obey fans of the film with a new vinyl release of the movie's music (featuring a remaster by Howarth himself).

Press Release: Austin, TX – Thursday, January 17, 2019 – Grab your sunglasses, your bubblegum, and your shotgun as Death Waltz Recording Company is bringing back John Carpenter and Alan Howarth's brilliant score to They Live. The soundtrack will go on sale January 30, 2019 at MondoTees.com.

A classic story of one man fighting for the freedom of the world with a great science fiction twist, the movie is full of amazing dialogue and also contains the greatest fistfight in the history of cinema. Like most of Carpenter's films, They Live has an urban western feel to it, which is emphasised by the infectious score.

Celebrated designer and artist Alan Hynes has crafted a spectacular collectible package for the soundtrack befitting the film's theme of subliminal communication, utilizing the iconic sunglasses to reveal hidden messages as you pull the disc sleeve from the slip case.

"They Live is as relevant now as it was when it was first released in 1988, maybe even more so. We are thrilled to be re-issuing the soundtrack of this iconic and important film," said Mondo & Death Waltz Recording Company's Head of Music, Spencer Hickman.

Carpenter and Howarth's main theme conjures up images of a lone cowboy entering town, with the main melody augmented with the sounds of harmonica and saxophone. There's a carefree attitude which reflects Rowdy Roddy Piper's character, but the score takes on a more sinister tone when he realises he doesn't know anything about what's really going on. Carpenter's signature synth tones create an uncomfortable atmosphere, but the main bassline is always fighting against them, never giving up. Electric guitar is used fleetingly, but brilliantly, and the whole score embodies the kind of rebelling against authority Carpenter is famous for. They Live will rock your world without the need for a Brazilian plastic surgeon to put you back together again.

HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U Release Date Moved One Day to February 13th

Posted: 17 Jan 2019 11:06 AM PST

Originally scheduled to come out on Valentine's Day (February 14th), Happy Death Day 2U will now be released one day earlier out of respect for the one-year anniversary of the Parkland school shooting.

Multiple sources, including Entertainment Weekly, share the news of the new Happy Death Day 2U release date, including a statement from Universal Pictures:

"When Universal Pictures became aware last week that the one-year anniversary of the tragic events in Parkland, Florida fell on the Happy Death Day 2U release date, the studio spoke with victim advocates and immediately began the process of changing the release date of the film. Following discussions with its partners in exhibition, Universal will move the North American release date to February 13.

Additionally, the studio has decided not to show the film in Parkland and the surrounding areas. Outdoor, digital and in-theatre marketing for the film will be suspended in that market. The studio understands the importance of memorializing the February 14 date as an opportunity to continue to allow the Parkland community to heal."

We'll be sure to keep you updated on any further updates regarding Happy Death Day 2U.

"Jessica Rothe leads the returning cast of HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U, the follow-up to Blumhouse's (Split, Get Out, The Purge series) surprise 2017 smash hit of riveting, repeating twists and comic turns. This time, our hero Tree Gelbman (Rothe) discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.

Jason Blum once again produces and Christopher Landon returns to write and direct this next chapter, while Happy Death Day executive producers Angela Mancuso and John Baldecchi are newly joined by EP Samson Mucke (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse)."

Film Title: Painkillers
Studio/Distributor: Kew Media Group
Release Date: January 31, 2019 (limited), February 4, 2019 (VOD)
Runtime: 83 minutes
Genre: Drama, Thriller
Director: Roxy Shih
Writer: Giles Daoust
Cast: Madeline Zima, Adam Huss, Grant Bowler, and Mischa Barton

PAINKILLERS marks the second feature film from Taiwanese-American filmmaker Roxy Shih, whose debut feature 'The Tribe' won multiple awards on the festival circuit. Shih also recently completed directing ten episodes of Dark / Web (Julie Benz, Hannah Marks), an upcoming sci-fi anthology that explores the problems with living in a totally connected world.

Roxy Shih comments, "I don't think PAINKILLERS is something that people have seen before; we use paranormal elements as mechanisms for the story, but at the heart of it we deal with very real themes of grief and coping with addiction. I look forward to seeing how audiences react to more genre-hybrid films like this, I'm really proud!"

Giles Daoust wrote the script, which received several awards and nominations in festivals and screenwriting competitions. Luke Barnett and Vincent Mascialeproduced the film under their Lone Suspect banner alongside Giles Daoust for Title Media. Mike Macari (The Ring franchise), Alain Berliner (Golden Globe Winner for My Life in Pink) and Catherine Dumonceaux (Title Media) executive produce.

Producer Luke Barnett added, "With so many conversations happening today around the lack of female directors being hired, particularly in the horror genre, we couldn't be prouder to have hired Roxy Shih. We all feel very strongly she's about to be one of the most in-demand young directors in town."

Blackwood Premiere Details at MonsterFest 2019: "SYNOPSIS: Nikki, a sound recordist, picks up a strange sound whilst filming on location in a forest. After a disturbing encounter, she wakes up alone, confused and filthy in her house. Her only chance at finding out what happened to her lies within her sound recorder.

With Blackwood, I wanted to make a short film that aims to subvert the genre while bringing a fresh take on the misadventure trope in horror.

I chose the sound recordist as a character to portray as their job is very solitary almost walled off from the rest of the production, a great character to follow and put in a solitary situation.

I love sound design and wanted to explore soundscape as a way to drive tension. We designed a specific sound, both ominous and peculiar that leads you through the film and to its terrifying source.

After visiting the California Redwoods I fell in love with the texture and scale of the forest, which is unlike the Australian bush, luckily there is one forest like that here in Australia and we used it as our location.

-The creature was designed by Torstein Nordstrand and brought to life by Daniel Fotheringham who was one of the animators for the creatures in Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and the "Smaug" in The Hobbit.

-Alanah Parkin who plays the Damsel was cast at 11 pm the night before a 6 am shoot after the original actress pulled out at the last minute, she wore the producer's clothes as there was no time to source wardrobe.

-The film was shot on Panavision Anamorphic lenses made in the 1980s that gave the film the cinematic and texture feel.

The most important character to cast for the film was Nikki the sound recordist, after meeting Danielle I decided not to audition her. She had a calm, confidence that carried onto the screen. Nikki gave a subtle and authentic performance and after our first day of shooting, I decided to change my mind for our last shot and get her to do it looking down the lens. It was a risk, but it paid off amazingly well giving the film the powerful and intense end that it needed.
