Outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen made her first comments to the media Monday after resigning her post over the weekend, saying she shares President Trump's goal of securing the border.

From outside her home in Alexandria, Va., on Monday, Nielsen thanked the president for allowing her to serve in his administration.

The article goes on to state the following:

"I am forever grateful," Nielsen said, praising Homeland Security officials who work to "execute their missions and to protect the homeland."

"I'm looking forward to supporting them from the outside," Nielsen said, noting that since her Sunday afternoon resignation, she has spoken with administration officials and lawmakers on Capitol Hill to ensure a smooth transition during her exit.

"I share the president's goal of securing the border," Nielsen said. She did not take any questions from the media.

Nielsen tweeted late Sunday night, “I have agreed to stay on as Secretary through Wednesday, April 10th to assist with an orderly transition and ensure that key DHS missions are not impacted.”

REPORT: The impossible challenge of tracking visa overstays

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:00 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by SANDIEGOUNIONTRIBUNE.COM:

Tracking the entry and exit of foreign travelers legally visiting the U.S. seems simple enough. In reality, it has proven an insurmountable challenge.

The best tracking occurs at air and sea ports of entry, yet even those systems are not comprehensive.

The article goes on to state the following:

The land borders are even trickier. Ports of entry along the southern border are focused primarily on screening incoming traffic, not checking who is departing.

As a result, it is nearly impossible to truly know how many people remain in the country long after they were supposed to leave.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimated 701,900 visa overstay incidents in fiscal 2017 — and that only accounts for air and sea travel.

That's about double the number of migrants caught crossing into the U.S. from Mexico illegally during the same period, according to Border Patrol data.

REPORT: Twin serves as surrogate for sister with rare disease

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 09:51 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by NYPost.com:

An Oregon woman unable to give birth to kids of her own is about to become a mom to twins — all thanks to her own twin sister who stepped up to serve as an egg donor and surrogate, according to reports.

Whitney Bliesner, 34, said she long-abandoned dreams of starting a family after she was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder in eighth grade that makes pregnancy dangerous, the Arizona Republic reported.

The article goes on to state the following:

The disease, known as Neurofibromatosis type 2, makes people more likely to develop benign tumors. Because of the disorder, Bliesner has undergone six brain surgeries, as well as a partial hysterectomy that would make getting pregnant complicated, according to the newspaper.

Pregnancy could also worsen her condition and there's a chance she could pass the disease to her kids.

"I was trying to convince myself that I was OK with not having kids because there was no way I was going to afford adoption," Bliesner told the "Today" show.

Then in December 2017, her fraternal twin, former Arizona State University basketball player Jill Noe, made her a life-changing offer.

"Whitney was getting a little upset about, 'Oh, I'm not going to be able to have kids.' I just told her, 'I'll do it for you, let's start the process,’" Noe told the Arizona Republic.

Noe said she never second-guessed her decision to become a surrogate for her sister.

"I really didn't put much thought into becoming a surrogate at all," Noe told the "Today" show. "It just felt like the right thing to do. "

REPORT: Tribes emerge as key players in debate over sports betting

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 09:39 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by APNEWS.COM:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Native American tribes have emerged as key players in the legislative debates over whether states should legalize sports betting, with some opposing the idea because it could threaten their casinos and others supporting legalization but only if they retain a monopoly.

In many states, tribes are fighting sports betting or taking a go-slow approach because they worry it could force them to reopen decades-old agreements that give them exclusive rights to operate casinos and offer certain forms of gambling.

The article goes on to state the following:

"The tribes have a major-league seat at the table," said Bill Pascrell III, a lobbyist for gambling interests seeking legalized sports betting across the country.

Six states have joined Nevada in allowing sports gambling since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year opened the door to its expansion, and legalization is being considered in more than 20 other states.

REPORT: Bernie Sanders claims he is against open borders, for ‘comprehensive immigration reform’

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 09:19 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by TheHill.com:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Sunday shot back at those who suggest he supports open borders, saying high levels of global poverty would make an open borders policy complicated.

When asked at an Oskaloosa, Iowa, town hall why he supported open borders, the 2020 White House candidate was quick to clarify his stance.

The article goes on to state the following:

"I'm afraid you may be getting your information wrong,” Sanders replied, according to The Washington Post. “I think what we need is comprehensive immigration reform."

"Oh my god, there's a lot of poverty in this world, and you're going to have people from all over the world. And I don't think that's something that we can do at this point. Can't do it," the Vermont lawmaker continued.

Sanders, as well as the majority of 2020 Democratic hopefuls, has not released an immigration platform yet.

REPORT: Critics say Yang’s cash giveaway means people won’t work. Alaska says otherwise.

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 09:10 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by NBCNews.com:

Democratic presidential hopeful Andrew Yang is making a name for himself on the campaign trail with a radical plan to provide all Americans over the age of 18 with $12,000 of income annually from government funds.

He often points to one state that has had a similar system in place for decades — Alaska.

The article goes on to state the following:

Alaskans who have lived in the state for at least one full year are paid out a dividend — typically $1,000 to $2,000 a year — from the Alaska Permanent Fund, which was established in 1976 and is worth in excess of $55 billion, replenished with the state’s vast oil revenues.

“It is wildly popular in a conservative state,” Yang tweeted. “It has created thousands of jobs, reduced income inequality, and improved health for children.”

Yang told MSNBC's Chris Hayes last week that his plan “would make children and families stronger, would improve our health, nutrition, graduation rates,” as well as “help millions of Americans make transitions in this time of historic change.”

The historic change is what Yang, 44, a lawyer turned entrepreneur, sees as the coming wave of further automation that will make a number of industries, such as truck driving, obsolete.

Critics like Robert Rector and Mimi Teixeira wrote in 2018 for the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, that the payouts “would decrease work among the poor and increase dependence on government.”

REPORT: Tourists could face the death penalty for taking photos on beach near airport

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 08:45 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by FOXNEWS.COM:

Picture-obsessed tourists visiting Thailand's Mai Khao beach might want to put their phones down — or they stand to face the death penalty.

Authorities are cracking down on visitors to the beach, which borders one of the country's busiest airports, Phuket International Airport, after it has become popular with tourists looking to take snaps with low-flying planes.

The article goes on to state the following:

The portion of the beach near the airport's runway has become known as "Unseen Phuket," and tourists flock to the section to pose with the landing planes.

According to the Bangkok Post, authorities have become more concerned as the beach has grown in popularity and is developing a new safety zone near the runway that will ban people from entering. Authorities fear the influx of people on the beach could pose as a distraction for pilots.

VIDEO: Abrams Calls Pro-Life Georgia Bill ‘Evil,’ ‘Abominable,’ and ‘Bad for Business’

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 08:01 AM PDT

As the most reliable and balanced news aggregation service on the internet, DML News offers the following information published by FreeBeacon:

Failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams called a bill protecting the lives of unborn babies after a heartbeat is detected in the womb “evil,” “abominable,” and “bad for business” during an appearance on MSNBC’s AM Joy on Sunday.

MSNBC anchor Joy Reid inquired about the bill, calling it appalling and asking about a proposed Hollywood boycott of Georgia over it. Gov. Brian Kemp (R.) has not signed the bill but is expected to soon, although Reid said it was “signed.”

The article goes on to state the following:

“This fetal heartbeat bill that was just signed: People are pretty appalled by the fact that he just signed what is, I think, the most restrictive anti-abortion bill in the country, so you have some folks that are talking boycott and are saying Hollywood should boycott the state of Georgia,” Reid said. “Films—we know The Walking Dead is shot down there—there are lots of television programs and movies that are shot in Atlanta. What do you make of these calls to boycott the state of Georgia?”

“I think it’s a call to action and a call to attention,” Abrams replied. “I do not actually support a boycott of our state. I think you re-victimize women in particular when you take away the jobs that have come to the state. However, I think it’s very shortsighted of our business community and our political leadership to not recognize that these jobs can go elsewhere.”

“We have to be a state that is not only friendly to business, we’ve got to be friendly to the women who work in these businesses. You should not have to worry about your ability to control your bodily autonomy because the governor has pushed such an abominable and evil bill that is so restrictive. It’s not only bad for morality and our humanity, it’s bad for business,” Abrams continued.
