HELLRAISER TV Series in Development with Producers Roy Lee and Dan Farah

Posted: 28 Jun 2019 03:50 PM PDT

It sounds like Pinhead will be making his small screen debut thanks to producers Roy Lee (IT) and Dan Farah (Ready Player One). According to Deadline, Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman and Eric Gardner bought the TV rights from New World in 1989 and they're teaming up with Lee and Farah for this new series:

"The intention is to use the mythology established in the movie franchise and the Clive Barker novella The Hellbound Heart as a launch pad for a new series that could be anthology, or a more traditional narrative."

Development is in the VERY early stages, so a showrunner has not yet been announced, and it's still too early to know whether this will wind up at a network or streaming service.

This project is unrelated to the Hellraiser movie reboot / re-imagining that David S. Goyer is going to write and produce for Spyglass Media Group. For more details on that project, make sure to check out our previous coverage! My hope for both projects is that they keep Clive Barker creatively involved, and these projects are certainly encouraging for Hellraiser fans who have had to endure direct-to-video sequels for nearly two decades.

Samuel Goldwyn Films and Shudder Acquire North American Rights to DANIEL ISN’T REAL

Posted: 28 Jun 2019 02:20 PM PDT

What if your childhood imaginary friend returned in your teenage years... and they weren't as imaginary as you thought? The answer to that chilling question is explored in Adam Egypt Mortimer's Daniel Isn't Real, and following the film's well-received world premiere at SXSW earlier this year, Samuel Goldwyn Films and Shudder have acquired rights to the movie.

According to multiple outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter, Samuel Goldwyn Films and Shudder picked up North American rights to Daniel Isn't Real, with a theatrical and VOD release being planned for late this year.

Here's what Samuel Goldwyn Films' Miles Fineburg had to say about the acquisition (via THR):

"The film is striking in so many ways, from visuals and performances to the incredible execution of psychological horror. We immediately recognized that Adam had crafted something special here and are excited to partner with Shudder and bring it to audiences everywhere."

Directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer from a screenplay he co-wrote with Brian DeLeeuw (based on DeLeeuw's novel In This Way I Was Saved), Daniel Isn't Real stars Patrick Schwarzenegger, Miles Robbins, Sasha Lane, Hannah Marks, and Mary Stuart Masterson.

Victoria Pedretti to Star in THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR

Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:16 PM PDT

After thrilling and chilling viewers with The Haunting of Hill House (based on Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name), Mike Flanagan will return to Netflix for a second season, The Haunting of Bly Manor (based on Henry James' novella The Turn of the Screw). Ahead of its premiere next year, the first casting news has been revealed for The Haunting of Bly Manor, and it's a familiar face from The Haunting of Hill House.

Deadline reports that Victoria Pedretti will play the lead role in The Haunting of Bly Manor, with the news also being revealed by Pedretti herself in a new video (see below) shared on the show's official Twitter account. According to Deadline, Pedretti will play the governess, Dani, who watches over two peculiar orphans at a secluded mansion.

Mike Flanagan is expected to once again be at the helm of the new installment, with executive producer Trevor Macy, Amblin TV, and Paramount TV also on board.

The Haunting of Hill House fans will no doubt recognize Pedretti for her haunting and heartbreaking performance as Nell Crain in the first season, and she'll also play one of the lead roles in the upcoming second season of Netflix's You, as well as a supporting role in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.

With The Haunting series looking to follow the American Horror Story template of telling a new story each season, Flanagan could have the opportunity to work with other actors from the first season of The Haunting of Hill House, and we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are revealed.

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE Documentary PHANTOM OF WINNIPEG to Make US Premiere at Sleepy Hollow International Film Festival 2019

Posted: 28 Jun 2019 10:27 AM PDT

While some cities are known for having midnight screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show for decades, Winnipeg is the city that never stopped championing Brian De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise since it was first released in 1974. The city's obsession with the cult film is explored in Malcolm Ingram and Sean Stanley's new documentary Phantom of Winnipeg, which will make its US premiere at this year's Sleepy Hollow International Film Festival.

Press Release: Sleepy Hollow International Film Festival (SHIFF) proudly announces the U.S. premiere of directors Malcolm Ingram and Sean Stanley's PHANTOM OF WINNIPEG, a rollicking, deeply-felt love letter to the 1974 Brian De Palma cult classic PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE.

Hilarious and heartwarming, PHANTOM OF WINNIPEG is the spirited chronicle of the unique obsession the locals of Winnipeg, Canada, have had with the cult film, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, since it opened in 1974. Upon release, PARADISE came-and-went without fanfare, but not in the closely-knit city of Winnipeg—the film was an instant box-office smash that has inspired generations. Entertaining residents open their PHANTOM-loving hearts alongside other engaging interview subjects, including writer/director Kevin Smith, original PHANTOM cast members, star/songwriter Paul Williams, Gerrit Graham, producer Edward R. Pressman, and many more. Directors Malcolm Ingram and Sean Stanley and Edward R. Pressman are scheduled to be in attendance.

But the night's fun won't end there, because after WINNIPEG…

The original cult classic itself, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, rocks the Tarrytown Music Hall to its core! Director Brian De Palma's 1974 odyssey of a hopeful singer/songwriter (William Finley) who sells his soul to a Faustian record label owner (Paul Williams), and the silky-voiced muse both men are both obsessed with (Jessica Harper), will haunt your soul while it brings you to your feet. Legendary PHANTOM producer, Edward R. Pressman (THE CROW, AMERICAN PSYCHO, WALL STREET) is scheduled to attend for a live discussion, with additional special guests to be announced.

"SHIFF is so excited to have both the U.S. premiere of PHANTOM OF WINNIPEG and the original PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE at the fest this October," says SHIFF co-founder Matt Verboys. "The historic Tarrytown Music Hall is such the perfect venue to celebrate The Phantom, Swan, Phoenix and Beef, along with the devoted fans who love them—you really can imagine The Phantom himself haunting this theater as his Paradise."

Directors Malcolm Ingram and Sean Stanley agree, ready to unleash PHANTOM OF WINNIPEG at SHIFF. "We are honored and thrilled to share our opus at such a storied location," says Ingram. "Makes perfect sense. We are grateful to the Sleepy Hollow Film Festival for the opportunity."

"We feel privileged PHANTOM OF WINNIPEG will have its U.S.premiere at Sleepy Hollow Film Festival," claims Stanley. "And ecstatic that Ed Pressman will be in attendance." Quoting from one of the film's great Paul Williams songs, "The Hell of It," Stanley adds, "Roll on thunder, shine on lightning!"

Both films will be featured at the festival, which takes place October 10-13, 2019. Check www.sleepyhollowfilmfest.com and the Tarrytown Music Hall for forthcoming information on schedules and ticket availability.

SHIFF, a celebration of outstanding genre cinema in the cradle of the American supernatural, takes place in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, NY,October 10-13, 2019, and features an exciting lineup of film premieres, special screenings and live events. Cinepocalypse 2019 Announces Juried Winners

Posted: 28 Jun 2019 09:31 AM PDT

With another year of eclectic screenings of movies both old and new in the books, the juried winners of Cinepocalypse 2019 have been revealed, with Sara Summa's The Last to See Them taking home the coveted "Best Film" award from a jury that includes Joel Schumacher.

Press Release: The Music Box Theatre is honored to announce the juried winners of the 2019 edition of Cinepocalypse. As the festival wraps, it is also immensely proud to note that, in its third year, the festival shattered its second-year attendance record, and won accolades for its once-in-a-lifetime, center-of-the-cinematic-universe programming and guests. Cinepocalypse welcomed over 6,000 attendees, over 25 film guests from around the world, and hosted multiple sold out screenings, including Glenn Danzig's buzzed about debut VEROTIKA, first-ever screening of the hyper rare 'Gore-Cut' of TAMMY AND THE T-REX, and special 70mm screening of TOTAL RECALL with Michael Ironside in attendance, all at the Music Box Theatre.

The festival's feature film jury, which was led by THE LOST BOYS and FALLING DOWN director Joel Schumacher, has awarded "Best Film" to Sara Summa's unnerving, character-driven THE LAST TO SEE THEM, which also won Summa a "Best Director" award. Joining Schumacher on the features jury were filmmaker Jennifer Reeder (KNIVES AND SKIN) and Dark Star Pictures president Michael Repsch.

Reeder said of the jury's selection of THE LAST TO SEE THEM for Best Film and Best Director: "We are in a time when many writers and directors are challenging our idea of a genre film. This particular film is an unexpected and deeply nuanced portrait of an unseen horror, based on actual events with brilliant performances and masterfully directed. [Summa] is certainly one to watch out for."

"Best Screenplay" goes to Bartosz Konopka for his knights vs. pagans tale THE MUTE, which also won top prizes for "Best Actor" (Krzysztof Pieczynski) and "Best Cinematography (Jacek Podgorski). Rounding out the feature award winners is Azura Skye, who won "Best Actress" for her portrayal of an unraveling wife and mother in the horrific drama THE SWERVE. Additionally, "Special Mention Runner Up - Best Feature" acknowledgements were given to THE MUTE and Kirill Sokolov's rip-roaring revenge rampager WHY DON'T YOU JUST DIE!, which also took this year's "Audience Award."

The Cinepocalypse short film jury, presided over by filmmaker Austin Vesely (SLICE), Music Box Films Lisa Holmes, and film critic Nick Allen, award "Best Short" to BUDFOOT, from co-directors Tim Reis and James Sizemore.

The shorts jury also awarded Marion Renard "Best Director" for SWITCH; two "Best Performance" awards—Nora Dolmans in SWITCH and Meredith Alloway for DEEP TISSUE; "Best Cinematography" to THE THIRD HAND's director of photography James Watson; "Best Editing" to Sydney Clara Brafman for THE ONLY THING I LOVE MORE THAN YOU IS RANCH DRESSING; "Best Kill" to Erik Boccio's BRUTAL REALTY, INC.; "Best Scare" to GO TO SLEEP: A LAO GHOST STORY; "Best Creature" to ROAD TRASH; "Best Comedy" for WHO YOU ARE; and "Best Film with a Social Message" to WOMXN, from directors Adrien Gystere Peskine and Eden Tinto Collins.
